That is SO cool to learn about the grocery store hatching eggs. I went to my Trader Joes this week and checked their eggs. I saw NONE that were labeled "fertile". But it is WA - I'm sure I wouldn't need to look to hard to find some in a grocery store or co-op.

Good luck on hatching them!!! I may try it next if we have another broody!

Well, I built a candler made out of a box covered in duct tape (was a thin white box) with a lightbulb and a small hole to place the egg.. I STILL cannot see into my EE's eggs!!! I guess I will just have to watch those eggs very carefully... I did however figure out that one of the two questionable eggs is indeed alive!!!I could see in the egg much better and I STILL did not see any veins BUT, there was definitely something moving in it... On the second one, I think I see a blood ring but will wait until I candle them all again to make sure... I think I may play with a few small boxes and see if I can come up with a better idea.. Maybe use a stronger light but the box would have to be bigger than this one...

Why is it that I can NEVER see darn veins???
I did see them on two of the green light colored eggs I have...
some of the green ones are actually darker/thicker shells underneath, can't see in them...
the pink ones too, can't see much.
but often I can see the chick later on, but never any veins!
I feel deprived! boo hoo!!!
(but I still love hatching!)

oh, and for you guys who are good at this...
the ones that ARE for sure developing are in the corners of the bator...
what does that mean???
Mine is still air, so I'm sure the corners have a different temp... is it higher? lower? quieter over there?
:)

I have one of the small bright flashlights from Home Depot, but it's pretty flat on top, so candling with it in my palm, and the egg on top of my fist works...
but going Down on to the top of the egg is hard! does anyone have a good solution to make the flashlight make a seal on the egg top???

I use one of the mini mag lights with the 4 LED light upgrade.. For most of my eggs, it's awesome although I've never had my eggs "glow" like you see in all the pics... But for Miracle's eggs (true americauna x rir), they are just too thick and/or dark.. Not really sure which... My mini mag woks really well on top of the egg but not so much the bottom...
