Hi everyone. I'm carcar80 and I'm addicted to chickens.

;) Seriously though, I'm about to put chicken eggs in my incubator for the first time, and I have a couple of questions. I have hatched out ducklings several times but this is my first time with chicks. I'm realizing now, I should NOT have started with "high value" eggs. LOL! I'm a nervous wreck and they're not even in yet!

I have just a little still-air LG, for reference.

Okay. This is how I'm choosing to do my eggs. I've never crated before. I used a cardboard carton and cut the sides down a bit.
First question, how far am I supposed to lean them? Like, is there a common object (or size of object) that people use?

Hi carcar80,
I'm too am a chicken...incubator addict lol

chickens are much easier than ducks so you should be good...
I have an auto egg turner myself but I believe it's "Farmerviola" that puts a book under one side then the other and back and forth...good luck

Thank you. :) I just figured this would take less time to turn a dozen eggs, especially in the mornings when I SHOULD be getting ready for work. Lol.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. The eggs I have set are a mixture and destined to be mutts when they hatch. I currently have 16 layers, 3 jersey giants, 2 Auracaunas?, 2 white leghorns,2 Wyandot, 1 buff, 2 comets, 2 white something or others?, 2 brown something or others 1 of which is Bob the rooster. I took the eggs from the layers and can't figure out the difference in eggs except the leghorns and EEs. So it will al be surprise all they way around.

Quick question my temp is steady at 99.5-100 should I increase it at lock down? Any suggestions to maintain 70% humidity during lockdown.?

no need to increase temp...I have found that 70% isn't necessary..45-65% is fine...mine usually hatch at about 45%
