well it's official...the eggs that were in the incubator when it spiked 124 are dead....of course!!

I have been setting eggs from the bantams...I now have a total of 4 girls laying....2 are still a mystery?? I believe 1 must be one from the silkies, found it in the corner of the floor....the other option is phoenix bantams.

so exciting to lovingly hatch and raise these babies then start raising those babies babies!!

Sorry that you lost a whole hatch!

Ok so I just got 30 silkie eggs in the mail Saturday. Rested them 24 hours. Put them in the incubator Sunday.i decided to candle a couple to check for cracks and floating air cells. Sure enough most of them have an air cell that drifts back and forth when you tilt the egg. This is only my second hatch so I'm not sure what to do. My first hatch I did last month I incubated the eggs laying down. What I'm wondering is if I should incubate with the carton method and maybe stop turning for the next 24-48 hours to give the air cells a chance to reattach but keep them in the incubator?
Some immediate advice would be greatly appreciated! !

This is only my second hatch. First for chickens/silkies. I'm so excited! Can I see pictures of your silkies?

I have a lot of photos of babies I hatched from my past, and some older girls from my past, but I don't have any of my girl out there now..at least I am hoping it's a girl. Looking like a girl. She's my first buff Silkie. Very pretty. Here are some fun photos.

I'm 3/4 for my English Orpingtons that went into lockdown. 3 are out and gorgeous. The 4th I was concerned about it, since before lockdown it had no air cell visible, but was clearly alive and moving. After the 3 chicks hatched and dried, I took the last egg out to give it a quick candle and the chick had died. It was a full term chick, but still had the entire yolk attached and I think without the air cell, she just couldn't get thru the external pip to get air.
I still have 8 Blue Marans in my other incubator and I'm going to set 8 more Blue/ Splash English Orpingtons tomorrow.

Haven't had good luck with shipped eggs but have read a lot. It says to put in egg cartons with holes for air. Or in Turner but don't turn till 48 hours

it's hard to know all you can do is try...most try not turning them for a few days...good luck

I'm so glad to hear that advise since I already carved up a bunch of cartons with holes on the bottom. I think I'll let them sit for a day or too then just turn them in the cartons.

for detached air cells, I also stop turning at day 16 instead of 18. And leave in carton upright for hatch, and only candle inside the incubator - without removing it or tiling it side to side. The air cell needs to reattach and heal so be extra gentle about tilting when candling at least for the first 14 days.

I have a Rock X Red on... well I thought she had six, and I surely did move six eggs with her to her brooding pen, but now I only see four... but anyway.... She has been sitting for 10 days now. I have been giving her water and feed from my hand since day one, and she's taken it getting only a little ruffled about my hand sticking in. Today, she got excited when I replenished the other birds feed and they made a commotion getting it, and she wanted to get out of her cage. Is this normal? Should I let her in and out? She sat right back down on her eggs, and hasn't gotten up again all day, which is good because I thought she might have given up because this is her first time brooding. She has constant access to her own food and water supple, and I give her fresh straw in her nest and in her cage. This is also my first time brooding, so I wonder what you guys can offer in the way of what/what not to do/expect? Thanks

This is my second time with a broody, Friday is the day. Good luck.
