Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I found several rolls at second hand stores (Goodwill, St Vincent de Pauls) I think I paid .50 cents a roll...Of course they aren't complete rolls but enough for several hatches... Its my go to place when I am looking for anything..
Oooh nice!! thats my kind of price! I love goodwill I never would have thought to look for liner!

I checked one egg very quickly (rsn to the bathroom, candled for 10 seconds ran back. I could not see the air cell. What does that mean?

sometimes I will just put the flash light right in the incubator and do a top-down look for the internal pip :)

are you sure you candled the large end? the air cell should be at it's biggest size by now. it will start to become very dark/black inside (no more clear)

Hi everyone, JDchicks sent me the link to this fabulous thread. So I am new to chickens and I am incubating my first batch of eggs from my own Silkie hen. I only have one hen and two rooters, so I gathered eggs over a 10 day period and I am now on day 9.... I almost didn't put in the oldest eggs cause everything I read led me to believe they were too old. I figured heck I won't loose anything giving it a try, discard it now discard it later...... no difference. I have studied the candling charts and I guess there is a big learning curve with that stuff. On day 6 I thought my 3 oldest eggs were goners. But today I candled again and I don't see any change with my 5 youngest eggs but the 3 oldest that I thought were red ring (guess I don't know what I am looking at) I started to see the veining. then I took a 2nd flashlight and I see something moving! Yipeee! So the three I thought were no good I think are good and then that leaves the 5 that I thought were good what is going on with them? I just see a solid blob floating around in there. Do you think they were not fertile? Are they still developing and maybe they are behind the others but that doesn't make sense.....What's going on! LOL Now I am sorry I didn't throw in that egg I gathered 2 days after I started incubating..... I read that it was ok to do it next day but that was the cut off.
This is just my opinion...I would leave them alone for a few days then candle again........
If you would decide to leave them the whole time.it would not hurt anything............
My deal is, it is better to leave them then chance throwing away a developing chick.
I do not candle much....days 11 and 18..
Oh, and really glad you have joined the thread.....................WELCOME ! and good luck

I love that place and try to go once a week...Once my veggie drawer in my fridge had broke and I didn't want to pay the 50.00 they wanted to replace it, found the same exact one at Goodwill for $1.99 of course I waited a few months and dealt with a broken drawer but it was worth it! ... LOL... I rarely ever buy anything from Target, walmart etc... My older sis taught me well

what day are you on?

white or brown eggs? I started hatching with brown eggs and they are pretty tough to see through. if you ever get the chance to candle a white egg, it's a lot easier to see veins! really fun for learning on :)

movement is great!! I would not toss any eggs until day 10 or even 15 if it were me!

Well, it is one of those mornings..............
First pip last night....it is high on the egg and no progress for about 14 hours......still chirping.
I do not think it can finish due to the location of the pip...hate this..............
I will likely pull it out to help a little later if no progress..nothing else has pipped.......
I may have messed up putting them in lockdown a day late ?

Have been really worried anyway because of small air cells
and the shipped eggs had messed up air cells.........21 Days yesterday..........

Congratulations stewedmamma.........................

cmon babies... I will be saying prayers for yours!!!

I do not think you hurt anything starting lockdown late - I do not start 65% humidity until I see the first pip, so they can keep losing water weight

I was scared about messing anything up so I really rushed it. The whole egg just looked grey to me, is it possible that is an internal pip? Maybe the head was in the air cell? I'm unemployed but have a side job this evening, I'm so worried I am going to miss something! Leaving the boyfriend in charge which is probably a good thing, he's much more hands off then me! I don't think I will look at them again...I just hope what I saw was ok!

In this incubation and hatching guide (it's for goose eggs but it applies to chicken eggs too), he talks about seeing a "shadow" as the chick moves into position for hatch before it internally pips. you can see the illustration for this part way down the guide.

it is a LOT of reading but it helped me understand the process so much better!

here is an internal pip (on a white egg)
