Question for you all.......had one chick hatch 8 hours ago. It hasn't dried out yet. Perhaps the humidity is too high. Should I take it out and put it in a brooder with 3 day old chicks? Or should I just leave it in there?

I currently have the humidity in my incubator at 45-55%.
When am I supposed to increase it to 55-65%?

Ok so I need help!!! I started eggtopsying my eggs and found one chick that is alive but very much shrink wrapped it can not get in the right position but is still alive it still has blood sells in its membrane but yolk appears to have been completely absorbed what can I do for it? I can not see its head near the air sack nor can I see its feet but the belly is right there and bulging from the absorbed Yolk,

are the veins bright red? dark red / black? picture?

It is in the shell the inner membrane is not broken can not see its beak defintly shrink wrapped tight the membrane was dry and white and it is soaking up the moisture I put on it. can see the blood vessels when I moisten it I had about 10 dead shrink wrapped chicks that I autopsied befor this one and another one came up they are day 25 today I never expected to find any of them alive.

wow day 25 okay I would be busting that chick out of it's shell! since you can see the belly in the air cell I suspect malposition?

you can use sterile saline solution, or boiled water, or anti-biotic ointment (without pain reliever) to soften the membrane. doing so will let you see where the veins are. it is important that you do not sever any veins, although by day 25 they should be mostly receeded into the chick and not full of blood by now.

I would peel away the shell until you find the beak. then make a tiny hole at the beak where just the beak can breathe, it doesnt need its nostrils out right away. if the membrane is moistened enough then it may be able to wiggle out on it's own, put it back in the incubator and see what it does. just breathing is what it needs right now.

end of day 19... we have an internal pip!!!

oh lord the cheeping is going to keep me at the incubator all night I can tell already...

I'm at the end of day 19 too. No sounds or pips yet. EE eggs.

I don't worry about raising the humidity that high until day 18 when they go into lockdown.

Here they come!!!!
Set on the 15th

Turned diligently... at 99.5 degrees as per the little giants destruction book... by guess and by golly on the humidity... and I had a pip yesterday AM at about 5... he finally showed up out of shell at 10P. This AM at 4, there were TWO boppin around in there
Then before bed last night, the cochin egg dweller blew a big hunk out of HIS shell revealing a Blonde beauty.

He just got transferred to the Brooder along with his pretty much dry and froggy clutch mates, who I am temporarily calling Sam Spade (everything is DARK... even Toes, Nose, and Comb... (Yah Yah, I know, there's no nose)... But just a bit ago, when I transferred HIM out (no feather feet, so he may have only got the coloring of his fluff butt mother..

I got the yucky shell out, and as much of the gludge from that shell, and there are 9 pipped, and two more who are hollering!!!

So far so good! Pretty soon I'll be up to my pits in chickies...

Sounds like you were having a blast watching little chicks popping out like popcorn!

I would take it out, but not sure I would put it with the three day chicks..unless you can watch it for a while. They tend to get knocked over by the older ones, and can actually squish the little one. Is there some way you can separate them in the same brooder while they can still see each other until the little one is dry and up and waling about, in about a day?

ok well its too late it died it was very malpositioned head was at small end of egg and no way it could pip I think it suffocated so I am at 0 out of 24 and pretty sure the one I have left that is at 22 is also gone. Oh well 9 more days until I can try it again. All the chicks I eggtopsied were fully formed and had fully absorbed there yolks I am going to call it a learning experience changed my temperature adn humidity level for the next batch.
