I would like to share how I achieved an 80% to 100% hatch rate with a Janoel 12 incubator.
Please note: Hatch rate only includes the percentage of fertile eggs that successfully hatched, and excludes infertile eggs from the calculation.
First hatch - 14 out of 24 eggs hatched. Too much humidity, temperature too high
Second hatch 12 out of 14 hatched
Third hatch 4 out of 4 eggs hatched
Incubation tips:
- Waited for 12 hours after the eggs travelled to my place before commencing incubation
- Wrapped a towel around the bottom half of the incubator for the duration of the incubation
- Kept incubator in the hot water cupboard
In addition to the above tips, for the second and third hatch I improved hatch rate by doing the following:
- carefully scraped off any chicken poop with a sharp knife before incubation
- Kept a glass thermometer (from Chook Manor) in the incubator and kept temperature at 37.5 C, ignoring incubator’s digital temperature display
- turned the eggs manually 3 times per day. Checked temperature on glass thermometer each time and adjusted temperature if necessary
- was very careful not to bump eggs, and always turned eggs slowly.
- minimised the number of times I candled the eggs. When candling turned eggs very slowly and for as little time as possible.
- Dry incubated for the first 19 days (no water added). Days 20 and 21 added water and sprayed the incubator with a fine mist every time I lifted the lid.
I hope these tips help improve your own hatch rates.
