January 1, 2011 Quail Hatch Along

Ya, I'd say you need quail TV for those boys down stairs and the Buttons to see what they are up to.

Wanting to go broody, are they. They are probably plotting and planning to fill your place with little egg layers, right now. You best keep a close watch on them, before they take over. Just ask Shelley, she'll tell you, its not fun when they start multiplying 10 fold.

Talk about quail math, over the top if your not careful.

HA, that's why I steal their little eggs. They keep trying, though. It's amazing how they can manage to hide an egg or three now and then, even in dog carriers...

On the babies hatching.

Buttercup - I like small hatches. Since I only have a few birds, that means I can hatch more often. Of course, I also intentionally bought the Brinsea Mini Advance to MAKE myself only do small hatches.

Hope some of those babies hatch for the GD!

GD will make it, they are about 2 hours out, now. Hatch is half done. So she has time to see some pop.

One of the small adolescent's eggs hatched. Looks like a runt, but I know better. Now that just shows why you want to wait until the girls are hens at 10-12 weeks before setting eggs, though. And the bet is on, is it a M/F? I am going for M if it makes it.

Put the first 15 in the brooder, they were picking at the wires.

Hi all!

I am doing the New Years Hatch over on the chicken side

but I am hatching my first ever Coturnix instead of chickens.

This is my first time in the quail world so be easy on me. I posted a thread but thought I would ask here too.

I set 19 eggs at noon on Dec. 13th. Temps. and humidity have been great. I had one little guy pop out at noon yesterday, so that would of been day 17 or start of day 18. Any way the little one is doing great.......but is alone. I have no action, nothing out of the other eggs. Is this ok, or did something go wrong??? How long should I give them? Any pointers? I have a sinking feeling that they aren't going to do anything. What in the world do I do if I am stuck with a lone chick??? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Leave the eggs in there for a few more days without messing with them. They aren't likely to explode. This isn't as big of a problem with quail eggs.

If you end up with the lone chick, give him a stuffed animal. Small beanie babies work for this. (I have a Mama Turkey for chicks...) Spend extra time making sure it is eating and drinking, too.

The lone chick is in the brooder with it's monkey mom (small stuffed monkey)

and is doing great. It drinks and eats great. I plan on leaving the other eggs for a few days, I sure wish they would hatch.

I guess I will have to get more eggs if they don't hatch. I can't start raising quail with just one.

Do quail get shrink wrapped as easy as chickens do in the shell ??
