January 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
So late December I got 6 free eggs. All fertile and growing.
I offered to hatch some eggs for the person who gave me the 6 free ones. I got 6 more to hatch for them.

it’s day 7 and only 2 are looking fertile (or developing anyway) 😬

One was extremely large. Probably double yolk. Will find out on day ten when I pull em. One was really small, like the first of a chicken. One was practically ball shaped. I guess I shoulda caught it early and let em know those weren’t good for hatching usually.

I agree with your assessment. Hopefully it goes well.

My experience with pullet eggs is limited but negative. They were small but the shells were what caused the problems. Chicks developed well then couldn't pip externally. The shells were way too hard for successful hatching. When I went to crack the egg, thinking of one in particular here, on the counter it look like 3+ hard whacks to get it open. Poor chicks never had a chance. I'm not sure if that was the norm as it was negative enough I've never tried again.

It's day 7 for my Trader Joe's eggs. Day 5 for the local brown eggs. I'm down to 6 TJ eggs. All from the 352 (Julian date) batch which I don't believe is coincidental. They got a few less days in the fridge and probably a different experience with shipping.

Those 6 TJ eggs are looking good. I'll stop short of saying they've caught but they look stronger everyday.

Nothing to report on the day 5 eggs. They look solid. I would be surprised if I don't get at least 5/6 of those ones hatched.

Just for fun I'll share the breeds mixes they might be. Roosters: Barred Rock, Light Brahma, Rhode Island Red, or Lavender Orpington. Hens: Hens: Lavender Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Light Brahma, Dark Brahma, Speckled Sussex, White Leghorn, Easter Egger, Barred Rock, or Golden Comet.
I've only seen a medium brown egg come out of this flock. The chicks hatching from this flock recently are all either black (BR looking) or white (some with spots).

My button quail eggs (9) are due out on the 17th. I’ll update at lockdown time on the 14th.
Reading a calendar correctly and/or expressing my thoughts intelligently would probably be good skills to master at some point. :he

My quail eggs went to lockdown on the 14th day, which was yesterday (January 4). They are due to hatch on the 17th day, January 7.

I braved the broody’s wrath to candle, I only saw one that was definitely developing, and I left a few more that I wasn’t too sure on, but I took a couple more that were definitely infertile. She’s still on I think 4 or 5. I don’t know why, but every time we have a broody, no matter how many eggs we give her, we always only get one chick. This’ll be the 4th time it’s happened in the last year if none of the others are developing.

day "7+"
5 days since I lost my broody and became incubator momma
taking day suggestions haha.

there were 14 originally
just candled for the first time since I found the nest 7 days ago
at the time there were varied levels of development and then mom got removed in the middle of the night one night and I didnt retrieve the eggs until late morning, so you never know what to expect
tossed 9 of them just now
a few looked like they never started, maybe not fertile - I might have cut down my number of roos too drastically lol - or stopped quickly
2 looked dark nasty icky
1 had a super textbook blood ring

these are the 5 remaining!
boring white eggs, nothing fancy haha
the day I found them, the most developed looked to be 3 days along but it was the only one like that and I have no way of knowing if that one is one that turned icky

guess my hatch date?
