January 2021 Hatch-A-Long

A week to go on the first 3 I set! All are doing well still, active and right on schedule. I added another couple the following week and 3 more this morning, so I’ll have a staggered hatch, but that’s nothing new around here. Haha. Hoping to get a bigger incubator this year but covid is making things tricky. :( built my new brooder box too. Need to get some hardware and things to finish it but should have it done by hatch day. :p

Out of the 3 eggs we ended up incubating, we successfully hatched 2. Unfortunately the third egg did not make it. But these are the 2 we hatched inside plus the one we snatched from outside with Momma so the new hatched baby wouldn’t be alone. The chipmunk striped baby hatched on 1/6, the yellow on 1/14 & our fluffy baby hatched on 1/18. 😊 View attachment 2500399View attachment 2500400View attachment 2500401View attachment 2500402
Your little brown one is so cute! :love Those cheeks are too much.

Seven days to go on my (pekin) duck egg incubation, targeting Jan 31. Of the 12 that entered the incubator, 6 were removed as infertile about day 8-9, leaving six. Just removed two more after candling - obvious blood ring in one, failure to progress in the other - looks like it happened just after the last candling. Good movement in the remaining four. Fingers crossed.

Oh man, I really dropped the ball on this and forgot to post updates. Well! 22 eggs in and 13 hatched. Not good, but okay for my first time. 1 was infertile, 6 died early, and 2 died before they could absorb the yolk completely.

Here my final lockdown results for the first batch if 2021. 7 eggs into lockdown. 5 chicks hatched. 1 never developed properly (the Trader Joe's egg) quit day 20 +/-. 1 local egg was DIS, possibly malpositioned.

Of the 5 that hatched I culled 1 for leg deformities. Another had a deformed foot that I was able to correct with a tape "boot" for one day. The toes on that foot are still deformed slightly but the chick can stand and walk fine. So I'm not going to fiddle with it further. I'm thinking my incubator temps were off or bad genetics. There were also some quitters of these local eggs set 1 week later in the Nurture Rite. Which has a pretty stable temp. So I'm leaning towards genetics or breeder flock care lacking.

Overall this hatch was not great but not terrible. I bought these as table eggs only so I'm happy with the 4 chicks we hatched.

Here they are! I'm already making guessing on who is probably a roo (see last two pics).

Hanging out with their older hatch sibling. Only 3 chicks this round. The other had a humidity emergency while zipping, still seeing if the hobble will help it walk.
The spotted chick is gorgeous. I'd love one like that in my flock.

Hope the leg issues sort out for you with what you're doing. I have a terrible track record fixing them (splay leg or whatnot). But I've read on BYC it's very possible. I now lean towards culling. :(
