January Hatch-a-long 2018

End of day 21. My five eggs were all laid on different days, and I'm keeping track of status updates:

12/26/17 - Pipped at around 4 pm PST
12/28/17 - Hatched around 3 pm PST. Peeping madly!
12/29/17 - Pipped at around 8 pM PST
12/31/17 - No activity yet
1/1/18 - No activity yet

I am now fully camped out on the bathroom floor, talking the chick that's hatched, who is madly peeping- healthy little thing! I was actually surprised to see it has perfectly clean little feet. Most of my bantam flock is made of cochins and silkies, and there are a few D'Uccles and Japanese. For this little one to have totally clean feet means a high likelihood it's pure japanese bantam, which suprises me as the eggs were all on the larger side of banty, and I thought them to be cochin eggs for the most part! So now I'm playing with the chicken calculator to see what coloration I may be ending up with.

I had hoped to be hatching her eggs, but the LO roosters didn't find her attractive.

Ok the hatching has slowed down so I am going to try and get some sleep... one baby drying in the bator 5 more eggs that look promising and 20 babies in the brooder. Yup time for bed lol

Right there with you! Of my 5, I now have two hatched, two pipped, and one other rocking madly. Eeee!

Baby chickens make me ridiculously happy.)

Hope you have a pile of new peeps in the morning!

Wish me luck, please! My first time 2 yr old Ameraucana hen went broody & started setting her first egg on Jan 7th, so they're all due starting the 28th. She is diligently setting 10 eggs, but most were put under her over a 4 day period. Obviously, I am a first time "broody assister" & promise to never do the 4 day thing again, now that I've done my research & understand to hold eggs to put in all the same day for a same day hatching plan. Have incubated several times, but now wish to have the broody hatching.

So, here's my plan! If chicks hatch for a day or two, I'll take them out (to a suitable brooder box) before they wander & the hen follows to leave the remaining eggs; then cross my fingers that more hatch within the next two days, so I can slip the first chick/s back under her at night. It's cold here in Oregon now & it would be nice to give the last of the eggs a chance. Crazy, but it just might work. What do you think?
