January Hatch-a-long 2018

so I have my 2 eggs in my octagon due the 4th, I used the octagon shape to turn the eggs rather than the cradle that comes with octagon. the shape allows for 3 positions eggs slant to the left eggs slant to the right and middle. in the turning of these 2 eggs, I am not going to have them in the middle at all, since my last batch had a lot of clears at the pointy tip end. Dragging out the hatch.

Husbands are funny, we were talking about male blindness how you can set up an incubator in the livingroom full of eggs and they will act like they cannot see it, recently he wanted to make some homemade kimche and asked where his old peanut butter jars were, "they were all just on this shelf and now they are gone." I threw them out over 2 years ago, and he didn't notice.
Your frizzle girl is a beaut. We love our homemade kimchi, I guard my galon jars well, also use them for jasmine & blueberry kombucha tea.

My broody hen is happily keeping her pipped/peeping eggs warm for the night, maybe I'll find peepers in the morning. Happy hatching everyone.

The 1st of 4 good eggs (or 5, this one is long & thinner) was out & strong this morning under "Blue". Yippie! My 1st planned broody hatch. "Blue" broody has been so good at this 1st try ever, I'm so proud of her. So, I've got to leave for work before noon & still have 4 more eggs (some pipped) to go; put eggs, chick & mamma in a closed dog crate with nest & chick waterer & food; this will keep her close to the rest of the eggs (that have a max of 4 days apart to hatch, my bad).

Another hen did everything she could to be in the sectioned off nest & pen as I checked on chicks & made their move to the crate; wow, had to keep removing her.

In a few days when they arrive, will slip 2 silver laced wyandotte chicks under her at night. A slightly complicated hatch, but so good so far. Will open the crate door when I get home so "Blue" can take a stroll to do her business. So happy to have a good 1st time broody to do all the work naturally (since I'm gone 5 mid days a week); hope to have 4 new pullets/hens to keep my egg laying flock of 12 in their 3rd laying year going strong. Best wishes to all!

Humidity dropped to 48% overnight. Did I shrink wrap it? I hear no peeping.
Think positive & wait. You & I have both got over the fence of having found our eggs cold once or so. Now you have pips, hang in there & keep us posted.

In the 80's, I did a lot of incubating of bantam Blue Salmon Faverolles, they were my favorite & were on the "critically endangered" list. May name then was " save the favs " & was on the BYC a lot also. Several of my last hatches were done with the "dry incubating" method as introduced to me by BYC;ers; it used no humidity at the end near hatch & stopped my problem then of chicks basically drowning in the egg fluids. It was scary to try it at 1st, but worked. Under the name save the favs , I had posted a lot of pics of chicks, incubated egg hatches, & great set ups in incubators with individual egg cartons around edge so each egg hatch would be less disturbed by other hatched ones. There were a lot of good comments added by BYC'ers too in hatch-a-longs.

my chicks are doing really well and they are getting there feathers and i was wondering if i should get them some chick grit are they old enough
Not needed until they are eating other foods, while free ranging, or what you may be giving them...and that shouldn't be for months from now.

Going into lock down with my 2 onleys. Probably tonight. May wait until tomorrow. They don't appear to be ready! I have the date right yoo. The bator I started them in didn't stay where it was supposed too. Got cooler often, because if where I had it. They are active though. I have replacement from those folks in now.
