January Hatch-a-long 2018

Oh no guys!!!!! I've just got home from church, packing my camera bag (I'm a photographer) for a shoot and checking on my chicks and FREEEEEAAAAKING out!!!!! I candled yesterday (lockdown day) and had 2 more quitters, so I'm down to 5 BCM, 5 2nd Gen OE, 3 1st Gen OE and 1 brown who-knows-what!!!

Day 19 today so I don't want to open my Bator but even with water added I'm not over 40% humidity .... anyone had a successful hatch at 40% humidity???? Temps stable. I don't want to shrink wrap the babies by opening that bator - don't know if I should syringe water down the vent hole or just hang tight and put it down to experience!!!! Oh Lordy am I second guessing EV-RY-THINGGGGGG!!!!! :hit:oops::he:fl:th

Usually, when that happens I syringe through the vent hole. For lockdown, i always keep humidity around 65- 75 %

So I have a really crazy plan of getting rid of all my chickens except 1 or 2 and hatching some new ones to start over as all my chickies are related. Hoping to get some silkie eggs as they are the cutest. Any recommended breeds? Also have 7 eggs under broody right now. the rooster is an EE and she is a australourp, she has been stealing eggs from other hens so there may be some ameracunas, welsummers, or chantecler. So excited!:weeHopefully all goes well:fl

You just need the humidity over 55%. I put a humidifier in the room to help with the humidity in the actual incubator.. it helps it not actually lose it as much, believe it or not! haha. I'm such an odd bird... I know. ;) Best of luck. If you don't have a humidifier try a new soaked sponge or something like that inside of the incubator to keep the humidity stable.

I'm also wondering if anyone has any recommended breeds to hatch? I love silkies and all the weird and cute looking breeds anyone recommend any in particular?

Personally, I think Bresse is a great breed - for egg laying ability and meat tasting if you butcher it - however, if you're just wanting eye candy then polish, any bantams, sultans, or cochins, or polish silkies, or spitzhaubens. haha :p
