6 set under broody for 22 to 24ish hatch...3EE/RIR and 1Silkie/ee and 2 silkie/slw/ee. Will candle soon!

Well, the chicksicles are rolling along and two are for certain, healthy viable and bouncy and four may still be going but the eggs are VERY dense. So hard to tell. The two for certain are now seven days and doing well.

Here's a photo of a couple of little chicks my Silkie hatched. There are 4 chicks - 2 beneath her. That one kept jumping up on her back to sit. My EE is sitting on 2 blue eggs, which should hatch on Jan. 31 or thereabouts.

I've been wondering about something when it comes to mother hens sitting on the eggs. If an egg is not good, does the mother hen know it and push it out of the nest? Or does she just keep sitting on it? The only hen to sit on eggs was my Silkie and all of her eggs were good and hatched, so I don't know what would happen if a 'bad' egg were under a hen. Does anyone know?

Also...how is it that the mother hen gets off the eggs for 45 or so minutes and then gets back on them and there is no harm to the little chick? Doesn't the egg cool off??

Most hens have brains the size of peas... don't depend on them to know a good egg from a bad one. They'll kick out both from time to time. I've had them kick out or crush open perfectly good eggs and sit on bad ones for 28 days. Some hens will scoot out eggs that have gotten too chilled for whatever reason. Sometimes that's a bad egg, sometimes it got too far from mom. I candle to see if an egg left aside has developed, sit it in the incubator to heat it for 4-6 hours and then check for movement. If movement then I incubate it from there or put it back. Some hens are almost always right but most are just luck of the draw, peabrained, egg sitters, who can and do make mistakes.

Well I candled my eggs and I have some astounding news! I have to say I was floored

As you might remember I have a full hova bator and I mean FULL 42 eggs. 3 of those eggs are due next monday. I know I should have left them be but I wanted to see if they were still good well they are squirming and I can see their little eyes and bodies and hearts really cool! So the rest the other 39 eggs are due the 29th so its only day 3 or 4 and I know everyone says wait for day 7 well

to them. I just candled and all I can say is that out of 16 BLRW eggs from Nikki only one was questionable it had a small crack in the top and out of 20 Faverolles eggs from Nikki only 3 were questionable!!!! and out of my 3 eggs 1 was questionable. Mind you this is day 3 so I shouldn't be able to tell but imagine my excitment to see 34 little beating hearts and 34 veins I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE 29th!!!

Great news, everyone! My serama hen hatched her first egg today! So exciting! It's the cutest little serama chick, with light striping.

I'm so proud of her, and hoping another egg hatches (one looked like it was fairly well-developed last time I candled)! The rest of her eggs will be going in my brand new incubator, which just came today! Today was a good day.

Currently letting my incubator warm up for the next twenty-four hours before I put anything in there.

Silver Phoenix: Yeah, you have a Serama chick hatched! Good luck with the other eggs. We would like pictures, please.

Cally857: Lovely Silkie & chicks. When did they hatch?

Kerjack: Hang in there!
