So far the crosses lay pretty good at about 4 a week. The "cornevelder" hens I have are F2 pullets and their body type varies from bulky to gamey. I think the next generation will be more uniform. It's a pretty "meat" bird cross, but I'm doing it to add some hybrid vigor and better growth/meat quality back to the Barnevelder. For some reason the F1s and F2's laid much darker eggs than the parent birds, but I'm not complaining.

The roos were all from unrelated lines:

Barnevelder roo (KC line) x Show Quality Dark cornish hens= F1 pullets (the suprise was that one laid really darker eggs)

then....

Barnevelder roo (Johan line) x F1 pullets = F2 pullets (all laid really nice darker eggs, some with speckles)

then.....

These chicks will be: Barnevelder roo (vB line) x F2 pullets= F3's

then....
In 2 or more generations and they might start to be nice looking Barnevelders.

Mine are due on the 19th......thinking I need to remove a few of the duds, scared to death I will take out a live one! But pretty sure the duds are "clear" and were unfertilized......they never started to develop.

Didn't see any movement in the one egg that I know for a fact started to develop, but still holding hope that it will be ok! The other one that I am hoping has something in it I haven't been able to see through at all since day 1. So it stays. And there is a third that looks different from the duds, but not the same as the one that I know developed. So unless it starts oozing, it stays.

I"m going to be bald before this is all over! Hahaha!

Whew! I saw movement in good old #6 just now! I feel better! Candled again and cleared out the duds. I'm just not going to crack them open, period. I'm not squeamish a bit, but I don't want to have killed one since this is my first hatch. I'm 99% confident they never started to develop though, and I know the one roo had multiple ladies to "service" so perhaps he didn't get them all.

That leaves me with only 2 lone little eggies. One for sure is cooking away, and the other has too think of a shell to see into.
