Hi all,

My sweet girl Suzi Q (named by my mother after the singer, mum got kicked out of church camp as a teen singing her songs) turns 19 weeks old today and I have a few questions about her.

She’s still pretty tiny (the photo isn’t current though), when can she be expected to mature and when do Japanese Bantams usually start laying?

Also, what colour is she? I would have called her grey, but I saw an ad that had pullets like her in it and it called them blue.

I already have a pair of D’Uccle bantam hens and a young Pekin pullet, but does anyone experienced with Japanese Bantams have any advice? Is there anything I should do differently for her?

She’s such a sweet little thing and has been an excellent foster mother/older sister/protector to Miss Piggy the silkie when her hatch mate died. Suzi has the patience of a saint to put up with her but it’s pretty cute watching them together, Pig’s twice Suzi’s size now but still seems to think Suzi’s her mother.

She’s pretty talkative and you can bring her inside and she’ll happily sit on your lap and chat away to you. Is she a typical example of her breed? If so it’s probably a good thing my space is limited or I’d have a giant flock of them!

Thank you.

The gray color seems to always be refereed to as blue. :idunno
I currently have a Japanese bantam, and had one in the past.
My current one is not laying any eggs, and I think it is related to the winter season. She is a pullet still.
My previous hen that is gone for a few years now, never did lay many eggs. I did get her when the seller claimed she was 2 years old. Maybe he lied, and hen was older than that, at time.
These banties are not much for egg production. They tend to be in the ORNAMENTAL category, and make BEAUTIFUL PETS:love
