Japanese Bantam question

My 13 year old grandson wants to show Japanese at the local fairs and such. He has been advised against using Japanese because of their short legs and associated problems keeping their wings and belly clean but he has his heart set on Japs. We were wondering do any of you raise Japanese on the ground or is it necessary to keep them on a floor with shavings or wire. He knows they will have to be washed very well before a show but other than that will it work to keep them in the dirt.

Keep them in clean pens & they'll be fine. I'm just in my second year with Japs but am really enjoying them. Delightful little birds.
