japanese quail food consumption - check my math please

Quote:
6 weeks = 42 days X 23 grams= 966/453 (2.13 lbs) of feed at $.29/lb.

math checks out, yes they waste alot of feed, yup Dumors brands at TSC, where ya located? got a purina dealer anywhere close? I get Flint River Mills @28% and Purina @30% GBS, Game Bird Starter as recommended here.

imho, if they are meat birds, hammer em with protein, even oyster shell if in budget, 16 weeks is kinda long, they will prolly be laying eggs or chasing skirts, using up lots of that feed and not putting on any weight after 10+ weeks.

just a thought.

Perfect info gamebirdboy, much appreciated.

model_A_tractor - thank you. I'm in Central MO, using gamebirdboy's link and found local sellers for Purina - looks like another place to hit up for info/prices. I haven't decided what I'm going to focus on (meat vs egg vs both), so I just went for 16 weeks as an endpoint to evaluate costs.

ANSWER ORIGINALLY POSTED. THERE ARE MANY BRANDS OF GBS, SOME NATIONAL SOME LOCAL... PURINA STARTRENA, NUTRENA GBS, SOUTHERN STATES, FRM (FLINT RIVER MILLS) MANNA PRO ARE JUST A FEW THAT COME TO MIND. PERSONALLY I SHY AWAY FROM KENT BRANDS BUT TO EACH THEIR OWN-- ITS BETTER THAN DULESS SOLD BY TSC

Agreed! Your bean counting pretty much jives with mine!

My eggs are pretty much cheap, but my meat costs me somewhere between $20-$30 a pound. Welcome to raising your own birds folks!
