I am going to build a coop for my husbands furture japanese bantams that looks like a japanese tea house. I salvaged 4 old fashioned wooden 6 pane windows that I want to use on the sides to look like shoji screens. I plan to white wash the glass of three of the windows to keep the coop cooler and give the hens some privacy as well as make it look like rice paper.

The corners are going to be dark stained 4x4 posts canted slightly inward to give it the look of timber.

The roof is going to be two story with the tradition low gable for ventilation. If I have enough and I think I do, it will be covered with sections of split bamboo and the corners covered with larger bamboo sections to make it look like they are the rafter beams.

Will a 4x4x 4 interior be enough room for 4 hens and a roo?

If the husband doesn't sqawk to loud about where I want to place it I'm going to make a wire passage so in the winter they can choose to be in the Teahouse or the big greenhouse where it will always be warm.

Has anyone ever tried a teah House coop?

NO, but I would DIE to get one! I used to live in Japan, and I really miss it. To see a tea house in my backyard would ROCK!

You have to post lots of pics when done, okay? And good luck building it

wakarimasu,

So, chickens and Japan--girl I think you're my newest Shero!

And I think the JB's are going to be darn lucky--make sure you have a entrance gate in red--good feng shui!
