japeness bantams babies

A short leg x short leg should result in 25% dead not 50% or more. Basic punnett square. 1/4th will be long legged, 50% will be short legged with 1 gene, and 1/4th will be lethal short legged with 2 genes which usually never hatch. If more than that die consistently in hatches then there is something else going on.

Seramas have what could be called a diluted version of the jap short leg lethal gene that results in the same thing but at a lower percentage.

My guess is that the 'Araucana' you are getting are probably EEs (Easter Eggers) as this is what the hatchery or store Araucanas actually are... they list them as the other because people readily identify with the name as 'Blue egg layers'.

EEs have a muff and a beard (usually and much like an Ameraucana) and NOT tufts. True Araucana are the only breed with tufts.

I suggest the following reading.....

http://www.ameraucana.org/standard.html

http://www.araucana.net/

And what we are talking about here are genes. These are parts of their DNA that they are born with... nothing contagious

Edited to add..... I have ALL 3 breeds and I LOVE them all as they all have their own special things about them
