What a day of surprises! This afternoon, DH is YELLING for me to come down to the chickens. My Jersey Giant hen went broody some time ago with TWENTY eggs in her nest. Well, with 20 eggs, you KNOW they won't all hatch. I actually wasn't even sure any of them would be fertile because I had recently added a partridge frizzle cochin rooster who is much smaller than the girls.

So, when I went down to the pen, Betty (the hen) was out of hiding, with FIVE little chicks running all over the place...cute as could be! She was so proud of them! I know nothing about broody chickens, but thank goodness BETTY knew her job! I raised her from a day old chick and had been told by a former friend that she had "wasting disease" and was going to die in a few months because as a youngster she had a prominent keel. So, I was very surprised that my three Jersey giants ended up growing and laying eggs and REALLY surprised that she did such a great job with these babies! I am SO proud of her.

A couple of hours later, I am playing on the computer when I hear DH again, "COME HERE! HURRY" to the dining room. He had the Humidaire incubator open and on the 19th day, here they were, two MORE NEW Jersey Frizzle Cochins hatched! We only had two of their eggs in the incubator because we weren't sure they would hatch. So, I have to wonder....what in the WORLD will a Jersey Frizzle Cochin Surprise look like?

Right now, they look a lot like my Black Copper Marans! LOL. Somehow I doubt they will end up looking alike for long!

Any ideas?
