It looks like i have a black jersey giant in my assortment of chicks right now, and, knowing very little about them, i want to make sure i won't have problems. it sounds like they will be a good bit bigger than my other birds; i have BO, BR, and Isa Brown adult hens right now, and i have at least a Polish and some EEs in the chicks. will this be a problem (bullying and the like)?

at the moment, the EE chicks are bigger than the black one (they are the biggest of the chicks, with the black one being pretty well in the middle range). also, the chicks are 7 days old today, so i know this probably won't be an issue for a while yet, i just want to be prepared.

thanks.

I'm a complete newbie, but I have two Giants mixed with 9 others (7 breeds total) and they are the most inquisitive and gentle of the bunch. Always the first to come up and let you rub all over them. I've never noticed them being aggressive at all. I was told they were a very docile breed.

our nest boxes are about 12"x12". should that be big enough for them? we didn't build our coop with giant breeds in mind

I have five Jersey Giants . I am new at this also. I have 6 Buff orpingtons that are 13 wks and 4 GLW 11 wks, 5 Giants 10 wks , and 13 EE 8 wks old. Oh and 1 black polish 10 wks. He came with the Giants.
I haven't had any problem's at all with them getting along with each other. they roost side by side , eat side by side, Lay in the sun like a pack of puppies , The only problem I have are my EE roo's pecking each other. I have 7 of them.

I don't think you will have a problem my Giant's get along with everyone.

Interesting responses for sure! My 6 (or so) week old JG hen is flat out mean. She pecks at the rest of the flock and bites me. I swear she comes running when she sees me just to take a chomp on my hand. We're really hoping that she mellows out eventually...

Oh Wow I don't think I could handle a mean chicken..... My five are very docile and seem to get a long with everyone. They let the Orpington's just rule the coop. I wonder if that will change when the Jersey's out grow them. They don't like for me to pick them up very much , they will eat out of my hand , but scoot way if I try to pick them up and fuss at me as they scoot away.
Would love to see you chick's picture's.

I have a Jersey Giant rooster with my 3 standard and 2 bantam hens. He is the sweetest guy. Super nice to the girls, to my kids and to me. We love Duke!! Plus he's a great protector! We haven't lost a chicken to a hawk since we got him. He is a diligent protector, always keeping his eye on the sky and giving the girls time to hide if he sees something suspicious.

here are two pic of her so far. the first one she was 4 days old, the second 12 days. i am planning on taking more pics when i get home today, they are three week tomorrow.

In the past week since I wrote about my mean JG pullet things have calmed down a smidgen. Snookie still bites, but our flock is more stable since our two recent integrations. She's slightly less mean. If you can catch her and pick her up without getting nipped, then you're golden. Once she's in your hands she doesn't bite.

Do any of your JGs have a white feather or two? Snookie has a white tipped feather or two on each wing. I wonder if that will go away after the first molt?... Regardless, we're not showing our birds so she could be polka dotted and I wouldn't care. I did check the bottoms of her feet and they have some yellow, so it looks like we have an actual JG versus a black minorca or something. For a while I was worried that Snookie wasn't a JG because of the unusual temperment.
