Our 8 week old Jersey Giant has a foot that is all curled up like a fist. She does ok on it now, but we know that she will be 11-12 lbs. when fully grown and we worry about her ability to perch and to get up and down the ladder ramp into the henhouse. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? Thank You.

Had a tiny runty chick hatch last weekend with the toes all curled up on both feet. Found info here on splinting the toes into a normal position with the sticky end of a band-aid & a tiny piece of thin cardboard cut into the same shape, (per instructions on the thread). Took the splint off today - one foot was mostly out anyways, the other about half - they were only on since mid-day Tue, and VOILA!!! Little chicky is walking completely normally!!!

Your bird is much older, but still young. Perhaps this may still work, in a modified form. Another post showed a foot-shaped cardboard cut-out that another member used to correct this. Sounds simple & easy - I'd say its worth a try!

Thanks for the encouragement wolfpak, I hope that your chick's foot problems are all sorted out. We made a couple of attempts at this when our Giant was about 2 weeks old, and she and her brooder mate picked the tape/band aids off within a couple of minutes, so the cure was not successful. She seems quite happy and digs, scratches, and runs around on her mangled foot just fine right now. My concern is when she puts on all of her adult weight. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has an adult producing hen with this condition?
