I recently got back into chickens and I'm at the very beginning of a breeding project. My initial goals in mind are to create a larger Silkie with the versatility of the Jersey giant with egg and meat production. I've had my first crosses hatch from my homemade incubator test.

This is a fun side project as I haven't invested too much time into genetic research yet and success isn't very important. I haven't seen much for this particular cross and decided to make it happen and see how it goes as these are some of my favorite breeds.

These two are the result of crossing a beardless white Silkie rooster with black Jersey Giant hens.

What is the purpose of introducing the silkie genetics?

There are so many amazing breeds already. You could probably find one that suits you - unless the goal is a giant silkie.

Yep, I like the idea of a giant Silkie. Jersey giants have always been one of my favorite breeds due to their size, so a big Silkie with the potential of higher egg production is the goal in mind.

It's new territory for me, but I like the thought of adding some more versatility to a breed that can tend to be kept more for looks than production. Those are my hopes anyways. At the end of the day, it's for fun and will add some interesting looking chickens to my flock.

Do any of them have polydactyly?
