Both my breeders (roosters) had nice combs. How are those turning out? SOP calls for 6 points on JGs.

Most have 6 points It is going to be hard to pick which ones to keep I can't keep them all.

Yeah, I know what ya mean! I have a hard time deciding which to keep too. Those Jersey Giants are just so sweet! I started with 13 and culled down to 6 girls and 2 boys. It was a tough choice, too.

Hi just saying Hi! I raised chickens a few years ago and have found myself back in the chickens. We moved to Fallon Nv almost two years ago. Its a tough place to grow a garden I am finding out! I am interested in being a sustainable farm. Due to the situation we all are finding ourselves in. We have mostly extereme weather conditions here. Our firstwinter was a douzy. We were told it hardly ever snows and it snowed about a foot but stayed forever! Got -20. So I was looking for cold hardy birds. Found the Jersey Giants to be such. There are several people here that offer Jersey Giants I bought from one man here that also had some blues. His dogs had just killed 20 of his young flock of blues but was able to get 2. They are so pretty and hugh. I also bought some blacks as well. They are cooped at night but are free range during the day. They are laying now and have very nice brown eggs. I love the brown eggs always have. I will be offering fertile eggs after the 1st of the year. Right now I have them in with my other chickens. I have some Welsumers and Black Copper Marrans. These are also laying and will offer fertile eggs as well. I am hatching some of the eggs soon set under a Blue Sweedish Duck. I will keep these for my laying flock because they are mixed with each other. Also will have some hatching Friday in an incubator. This is my first try at using an incubator. I will have Blue Sweedish Ducklings soon and will off ducklings when I find out what is required to ship them safely.

Its nice to find this Breed forum so I will be keeping upto date with all of you.

I am considering ordering some free range Chickens for meat and eggs for sale. I see some of the hatcheries have some good offers. Need to see how they do in the heat of summer and cold of winter. Need to earn some money as well.

Thanks Lottie:)

Not all of my girls are laying yet. The ones that are the eggs are still kind of small, med at best.Every 2 -3 day I get a goose egg from one I do not know which but it is always a double yoker.Yesterday I got a big surprise> Igot 2 eggs the size of a robins egg. I wish it was spring I would put them in a robins nest. (Every spring I get 2 that make nest under my deck. Anyway I do not have eggs for hatching. Sorry:jumpy
Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

Question about Jersey Giants. Several weeks, I picked up four baby chicks to raise for eggs. I got a Jersey Giant, a Buff Orpington, a Maran and an Ameraucana. The JG is the most gentle bird I've ever met. She is just a sweetheart. The one thing she did from day one was cock her head to look up at me when I go out to check up on them. She does it EVERY time and several times. Now that everyone is getting to be nearly 4 weeks old, a few of the others will look up at me. But it's a different look.

I really feel like my Jersey Giant is much more aware of what is going on. I'm curious if this is the nature of the breed or if this is a specific trait to this one bird. Any thoughts from those who have raised JG's from chicks?

Even when I hold her, she looks at me in the eye with this curious look. The others just kind of look around them and squirm because they want to go back with their sisters in the brooder.

Amy, some are just more inquisitive than others, but at 4 weeks, you should probably be able to tell gender (I can typically tell by 3-4 weeks for sure....not always, but usually).

For sure they're super laid back & gentle - one of the thing I love the most about my Jerseys!

ACK! Not what I wanted to hear. They guarentee with 96% accuracy that their hens are hens. But there's always that chance that I would get a roo. I think I could handle any of the other three being a roo but if my JG is a roo and I have to part w/ him, I'll be devistated. I can't have a roo where I live.

I guess, I'll just have to wait and see.
