Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

4-hmother, can you post some photo updates of this chick? I have a 5+ week old chick that I think may be a black jersey giant and she barely has any feathers! But she looks a LOT like your chick in the photo you posted back in May! Is it normal for Jersey Giants to take over 6 weeks to get feathers? How long does it take? THANKS!!!!

Where did you get your Red Link from? Mine is not quite "friendly" but close - with just a little coaxing she will come right up. I just trained her that every time I am going to give treats I give a couple of bok bok's chicken sounds then call out "special treat special treat" and then toss in some shredded tomato and veggies like zuchinni or figs - figs are in bloom now too they love those and this "special treat" call will get her to come right over where I can grab her. She either doesnt complain or gives a single "squaak" when I take her in both hands and sit in the chair to sooth her down she will sit there on my leg for up to 5 minute before she jumps off. Very sweet bird. Darn-it just realized I'm probably never going to be able to eat this chicken now. Ya'll need to remind me never to make a food chicken into a lap pet chicken in the future.. =)
I am just taking the time to remind "informative" never to make a food chicken into a lap pet chicken

A few pics of my 10 week olds from Taylor hobby farms. I'm going to go through them this weekend and try and decide on which cockerels I'm keeping for breeders and who is for sale. I have 25 straight run blue and blacks with only 2 splashes. One splash is a pullet and one a cockerel, they are keepers for sure. Since I have more black hens than blues I'm thinking of using my one splash and the rest blues for roosters to cover the blue black and splash pullets along with my 16 year and half old black JG hens. That way should get a good mix of color chicks. Can't wait for next spring!

Greetings from San Antonio! I am looking for a cockeral to buy! Where in Texas are you at? I would love a Blue cockerel if one is for sale.

I am in Ponder, a little north of Ft. Worth. I will have both black and blues for sale. They are turning out real nice but I don't need all of them. Would love for them to go to someone for breeding.

Excellent! That is exactly what I would like to do! I have chosen the JGs for that very reason...to conserve their heritage quality! Please add me to your wait list. Peace!

I'll pm you some pics of the cockerels as I get the kids and DH to help me catch and band them. Right now they are in the "baby coop and run" with 14 blue/black and splash ameraucanas. I'm going to keep all the hens for breeding and select my needed Roos. Then try to find the extra Roos breeding homes. I'm very excited to get all three colors as I have had the black JGs only prior to these. I'm also going to breed a couple of the blue JG hens with the ameraucana Roos to get blue/black&splash Giant Easter egger. Next spring I will be selling chicks and hatching eggs from them. There are a few people that have blacks around here but not the blue or splashes. I really love the blues!

AWESOME! It sounds like you are well off to a good start...as for me, I am just beginning. I have been looking for breed of chicken to start a small breeding project. I knew that I wanted one of the Heritage American breeds...the more I read and learned that the JGs are often overlooked for the time and dedication they require...I knew that I wanted to choose them. It has been hard finding any quality breeders, but finally I got some chicks. I want to get a cockeral from another breeder for the purpose of increasing the vigor and genetic diversity of the breed as opposed to all the birds from the same batch.
