Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I can't say enough about this breed. They are not only beautiful, but lay well, and lay XL-Jumbo sized eggs. You'll find aggressive cock birds in any breed; in my opinion, it's much more about how you interact with them than their individual disposition, but that's just me. Giants are slow growers...the first year, they will grow their frame - the 2nd, they'll fill out. I should think you'd be more than happy with them!

When they were chicks the girls interacted with them under supervision, held them, fed them, etc. As they got older we stopped. They are free range and everyone happily did their own thing the girls would play, the chickens would forage. The girl really never bothered the birds (they are simply to young, 3 and 1) They are not pets to us and we do not treat them like they are. But the girls are taught to be kind and that it is their responsibility to see to the needs of the animals.
I do not really want to carry around the rooster everday. But if it makes for better behaved birds i guess i could consider it.

@OrganicFarmWife I've heard from people that I take as well informed longtime breeders, that meanness in a rooster is genetic not a learned trait. I have disagreed, thinking now they are probably right. Probably more a problem with hatchery stock. Most breeders of any breed will state they cull any meanness out of their flock and breeding program. I had a hatchery Welsummer that went from being great with the kids to attacking them and then me as he got older.
My giant's are very calm and nice, hopefully they stay that way.

These giant's sure get big, make my red sussex look small and they are not Lol.

Pullet top right of the wood pile is bigger than the sussex cockerels, same age, just 8 months.

ould work well for me.
I am wondering what everyones experience with these birds are? Has anyone had i mean bird (i do know that every bird is different and even a gental breed might make an aggressive rooster)

I had a terrible Jersey rooster but in fairness he became aggressive after my two Jersey Hens became ill and died, they were sickly from the time they were hatched and realized they had gotten lead poisoning from their previous home. I would love to get a couple more hens though they were very docile.

We have had Orphs for about 25yrs. This year a neighbor got cancer and we inherited her birds. Many of those were black Jersey Giants. They were young, however when they started laying, they really started laying. They forage very well, yet stay close enough to the poultry yard. Some of the breeds will wonder quite a ways away, many acres away actually. The Jersey stays with in an acre or so of the poultry house. They seem to lay very well. We also have cochins, yet the Jersey were the first to go broody. I have 2 goose eggs under 2 different Jersey hens and they are doing just fine. Im actually very impressed with them. defiantly a breed that will stay on the farm.

I guess my mug is out there in multiple places. What's one more? LOL They were taken with a potato anyway. Here I am holding the JG boys. They are HUGE!

I've seen your ad's on ebay and have considered buying some of your eggs but I was remaining cautious. Glad to see you on here. Could you tell us more about your birds.

Those pics pop up on Google when you search jersey giant, I remember seeing them a few yrs ago. Didn't know she was on here.
I looked her up, hasn't been on since 2014, wonder what happened? On for seven yrs, 25,000 posts, and then gone?
