Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

The jersey giants are a lg. breed but aren't your other birds from small breeds and would show her much larger compared to them?
My mother used to buy white jersey giants in the spring and sell them to be butchered in the fall for fryers. She chose this large breed to get more meat. She kept some tho' for eggs, and I said then I never wanted to see another egg to eat in my whole life! I do now.

I'm so excited!! I will be hatching out Jersey Giants this spring!! Waiting on my bator's to arrive so i can get ready!! I fell in love with the breed last summer at fair!! Hubby and i were goin through the poultry barn and we heard this really deep crow!! Hubby said "now that will put the fear of God in Ya" LoL

Is anyone able to post a picture of a jersey giant hen compared to an average size hen? I am seriously considering getting some Jersey Giant hens in the spring, but I have no idea how big they are compared to an average size hen. Also, how good do Jersey Giant hens do with other breeds of hens? Considering they are bigger. They are such beautiful birds, and I would love to get some, but I want to learn more about them before I pursue it.
I have 3 jg hens in with very small oe's and they actully run from the oe's.

Hello! Newbie so please excuse me if I asks dumb question. Some great birds here! I can't wait for my chicks to show up. I have 15 on order! Which leads me to my next question. How big should I make their nest boxes, and for an opening to the coop?
pre made nest boxes are actully to smal for them. it really brakes feathers and such. I have 16x16 but when building the new coop just for the jgs i'll do 18x18.
as I want to show I want to make sure they do not get damage doing normal chicken stuff. Thats just me though.

Alright thank you! I'm not so worried about how long they take to mature. My chickens are all pets anyways, so I'm not so worried about eggs or anything. Thanks for the link as well.

I'll check it out.
Love my girls! We got some 2 week old chicks in June 2012 then a hatch of day olds in JUly-- and I know they are not fully grown they are pretty darn big (the lone Roo is huge) and they started laying right on target at 24 weeks in the middle of December-- no supplemental lighting or anything (and it was snowing at the time)! So just very excited that my (10) girls are laying -- about 7 a day, and very happy with this breed-- like their looks, they are so docile and fun, they are pets too, but with benefits! Its great having fresh eggs and they eat all our scraps as well!
Just wanted to reassure you, I guess...

HOW NEAT - that's why I first was interested in the breed! Went to my first poultry show ever about 6 years ago, and was greeted by the awesome deep crow of a Jersey Giant! I knew NOTHING about showing and almost nothing about chickens then...I recall the Black Giant was a monster. But I didn't know at the time about getting an exhibitor's list to find out who the owner was. Sigh..............

My coop is tiny, the only thing they do in there is sleep (and lay eggs). It works, but I will be getting something different very soon I hope. How many do you have in your coop now? Are they out during the day? I think that makes a huge difference in how much space they need.

I edited my first post and added some text, I don't want you to miss it :) You quoted my post before I was finished.
I read what you wrote on your other post. I have 15 chickens right now. Two of them are roosters (That arent getting along so well at the moment

) I free range my chickens in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. They refuse to go outside in the winter. My only concern with getting Jersey Giants, is that I dont have space to put bigger nest boxes, or lower rooster. I have 2 rows of roosts that are 5 and 6 feet off the ground. But I may be able to squeeze in a small on somewhere. Also, we rent our house, and our landlord is very picky and doesnt want big holes in his small barn that he let us use. It has wood lining on the inside, and the outside is metal siding. So it's hard to cut through, and our chicken door is only 9 by 12 inches, and I'm afraid that would't be big enough.

If only I had more room to expand my coop, then I would definitely get some JGs. For now i'm just considering it as a possibility.

Hi, new to the JG forum. We have 7 jersey giants. 3 roosters and 4 hens. ( 6 black, 1 silver) I enjoy this breed as they are very relaxed and so far having that many roosters together hasn't caused a lot of issues. We had a beautiful white rooster but he got into a fight with another one our birds and he jumped the chicken fence.... Needless to say he was eaten by a coyote :(
Total we have 33 chickens, hens and roosters total who reside with 2 guineas and 5 ducks.
