Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

This is a problem I had when i started with Giants. The SOP says that "complete absence of yellow" is a disqualification. "pad color" . They had been on purina flockraiser w/ marigold extract (for yellow yolks and skin....ie it helps brighten yellow pad color. It will NOT turn white feet yellow) I would like to hear others input and experiences. SHANE.

Interesting about the marigold extract. I agree completely Shane. I have been supplementing corn, along with an all-purpose poultry feed, to the birds I have separated to show. They're showing nice yellow on their pads, though the one that's laying is certainly lighter. The breeder pens don't get as much corn, just as a treat, and their color is less. Still there but have to rub feet on a couple of them to see definite yellow. And it seems slightly less significant on the blues as opposed to the blacks. I also give some leafy alfalfa hay that they enjoy scratching around and nibbling.

The girls approve of the new nest boxes. All of my eggs today were laid in one of the new nest boxes. (The JG isn't laying yet, so they were all standard size hens) The nest box has been there for days, I think since Sunday, but for some reason they all used it today

When I posted the pictures of my blue jersey giants i was hoping for some feedback. I did get some feedback, mainly questioning the color of their feet. Another comment suggested since they may be crossed with an orpington because of their shape. I know someone mentioned hatchery stock tends to drift from the desired traits but correct me if I'm wrong but aren't blue giants exclusive to breeders? I have never seen blue giants offered by any hatcheries, but that doesn't mean they aren't. I am not looking to show these birds just like the way they look and how gentle they are. No one else in my area has this breed so I thought why not. I would like to start raising more of them. I currently have a blue giant roo and 3 blue giant pullets, all about 6 months old. I have hatched 10 black giant babies that are now 10 days old I would like keep the best of and add to the mix. I also plan to buy some hatching eggs for the blue giants from a reputable breeder when they are available. So there is my plan. Not looking to show, just raise a nice purebred bird that I can enjoy and maybe sell a few, too. Now....having said all this, to the breeders out there, are the birds that I already have a good start? I don't want to mislead anyone who may get a bird from me by selling something other than pure giant. Thanks for any input.

It is possible that your Blue birds are pure giants, just ones with some ovbious faults from a SOP perspective. If you are looking to work towards SOP birds, then I think that you are on a good path. Obtain stock from a breeder with good birds, and work with them.

hi can any one tell me does jersey giants in black and blue have white ear lobes ??? the young day olds we bought from a hobby farm have white ear lobes and no yellow on there feet and the blacks some look like australorps and something else????? not sure what ??? thanks john
