Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I just saw this thread after I posted some JG questions in a new thread. I found answers to some of my questions in this thread, but I still have a couple more:

Do the roosters start crowing at the same age as other breeds? As far as when they reach a decent table size, some sources say nine months, but some say eighteen months! What has been your experience?

Thanks!

Agricola - my last batch of Jerseys began to crow at 11 weeks. I haven't eaten any of mine...but I will say they don't fill out completely until they're at least 18 months.

I processed 8 of my roo's at 8 months old. Nice size but VERY tough! Stewed they were fine but they grow so slow that by the time they are large enough to process they are tough. Roo's usually are though. I have 1 HUGE roo who is going to be my main breeder if he keeps his temperment and his feathers fill out better. Right now his tail is ugly! He is atleast 5-6 inches taller than all of the others! I haven't done any real measuring or weighing yet. It is so hot That I know he will swell up when it cools down! If it doesn't rain I will try to get pics this weekend. By the time it cools down I should have all of my ladies ready and my guys all picked out! I am buying all my breeding pen supplies now so hopefully they will be complete and waiting.

Good Luck and God bless!

The girl in the back is a splash hen:

All of my splash are all black except for the tips of 2 feathers! They all were black roo over splash hens.

Does this sound normal?

I bought all black hens hoping for them to throw blue chicks. I am going to begin breeding mine in October. Right now I am allowing them to do what they want in the run and I am just getting the eggs to eat. In October I will begin penning my breeding pairs. It's just too hot right now and they only began laying last month. I want them to get into a routine and allow time for their bodies to get into line.

Thanks,
God Bless!

Andalusion blue genetics applies to Jersey Giants, thusly:

Blue X Blacks = 50% each Blue and Black
Black x Black = 100% Black
Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, and 25% Splash
Splash X Black = 100% Blue
Splash X Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

Thanks! I really appreciate that! But is the almost totaly black color normal for a splash? They are a beautiful Black (green sheen) except for 1/2 inch or so of 2 feathers on their wings. I am possitive of parentage.... Black roo over splash hen.

Thanks,
God Bless!
