Hey, Margo - Yes, many folks have been burned by things like this, but of course it happens in every breed. My opinion, having only had this breed for 3 or 4 years now, and doing HOURS upon HOURS of research, there are those out there that all they care about is making money on the birds. There are also those out there who will breed anything to anything...yes, that will produce Jersey Giants, but if you just breed ANYTHING, the best are not represented and the breed will not move forward. I've gotten birds from both of these types of folks. I kept looking and looking at my flocks and thinking, "This CAN'T be the best out there." Keep asking questions....go to lots of shows, and look at the birds that place. Ask the owners where they got their stock from, how long they've been breeding, what they look for in good breeders...most, you will find, are passionate about their breed, and they will chat with you nonstop about their birds! Lastly, if you haven't done so, join the National Jersey Giant Club. I know I've mentioned this before, but the cost is so little and the benefit so great!
Mahalo - it will be VERY interesting to watch & see what comes of these browns. I wish we could fast forward to some 2-year old offspring, and set them side by side to some known excellent quality Giants so that we could know how "far off" they truly are. I know you keep detailed info. on your stock, and I appreciate you doing this extra work, making room for these extras to see how they will breed - we will all learn from your hard work!
