Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

we plan on doing just that I will post pics as I go along. As far as my Giants go We try to just keep breeding the best traits to best traits & cull out any defects. That being said the first time We got a brown chick We freaked out thought that the breeder mixed in an egg from another breed, until We found out that is all they bred that was a few years ago. But We really enjoy finding out & learning new things never a dull moment!! But Always a pleasure to learn more & more about the breed!!

Mahalo - it will be VERY interesting to watch & see what comes of these browns. I wish we could fast forward to some 2-year old offspring, and set them side by side to some known excellent quality Giants so that we could know how "far off" they truly are. I know you keep detailed info. on your stock, and I appreciate you doing this extra work, making room for these extras to see how they will breed - we will all learn from your hard work!

I need to post a pic of mine, I have only the one now . Had 2 but one just laid down and died one day. I am becoming more and more unsure than I have a hen by the length of the tail feathers. It is 24 weeks old. I haven't heard it crow, but it also isn't ready to lay eggs so I'm stumped. Will try to get out and get a good shot tomorrow in daylight.

Oh, I'm such a bad chicken mama. I had to put a pinless peeper on my JG today. Due to a number of unfortunate incidents, I'm down to two hens, a JG and a Buff Orpington. The BO has been bullied from the beginning by an EE that I gave away two months ago. And now the JG is going after her. Won't even let her get up on the roosting bar.

Getting a rooster is not an option. And I do want more hens but it's a tough time of the year to add to the flock. I really want to buy day old chicks as soon as I can in 2012. So to deal with the immediate situation, I took the JG to the vet today who put a peeper on her. She immediately collapsed. She closed her eyes and went limp. I FREAKED. She slowly came around and once I got her home, she's much happier. And for the first time in over a month, I was able to dump out a pile of meal worms and the two of them ate side by side and the JG didn't peck the BO.

thats sad. wonder whay made her go limp, do those things cause intense pain or something??

I think she was just mortified. I had separated her from the BO for a bit. Then had to put her in a crate, in the car, off to the vet. She doesn't like any of that. And then to have this THINK stuck to her beak. She was not at all happy. I FREAKED and wanted it off immediately. But the vet begged me to keep it on just for a few more hours. And once I got her home and back in her own territory and w/ her buddy Ginger, she definitely perked up. She CAN see to eat but doesn't hoover up her food. She's more thoughtful.

I'll keep a very close eye on her and hopefully we can take it off after a week or two. The BO has lost a LOT of weight being bullied away from food. I need her to eat and get her confidence back up first.
