Chapter 18
Out jumped a raccoon, hungry and fire in his eyes. Sunny screamed, while the raccoon approached and swatted at her. Nikki attacked the thing, and started a huge fight with it.
"What are you doing? Finish him off!" Fenix demanded when Nikki stopped fighting it due to it almost getting killed.
"No," Nikki said.
"What," Fenix replied, stunned.
"Let him live," Nikki demanded.
"Why? He almost killed us," Gingernut reasoned.
"So what? Kindness will get to him!" Nikki reasoned. Fenix ignored her reasons and spurred the coon in the heart anyway.
"That's the way you do it in my flock," Fenix boasted.
"Fenix..! How dare you..." Nikki said, stunned at what Fenix had just done.
"What? I am the leader of this flock. You don't decide anything, I do," Fenix challenged.
"Fenix, you should never kill like that!" Nikki scolded.
"And what's going to stop me," Fenix questioned condescendingly.
"Don't take it lightly!" Nikki warned, leaping onto Fenix claws-first, grabbing his neck and throwing him to the ground.
"You... have you just become a regular rooster all over again?!?!" Nikki shouted.
"Listen, I'm not going to put up with your pacifism all the time!" Fenix yelled, pulling himself up and throwing Nikki off.
"It isn't pacifism, its kindness, and I am very offended that you see it that way!" Nikki yelled back. "You are not the rooster that I defend and care for!"
"Well, what good would it have done if I just let the raccoon run away," Fenix responded with a small shake in his voice.
"You really have changed from a great, sympathetic flock to a group of heartless cowards," Nikki said in a lower, calmer voice.
"So what," Fenix argued.
"That same attitude is what got Sandy killed, made Jazzy run away, and is now severing me from you guys," Nikki explained honestly.
"How do you know," Fenix argued, getting angry again.
"Because, I heard you kick Sandy out. I could see that Jazzy was hurt that you only spent time with Gingernut and Sunny," Nikki explained. "If you never acted like that, maybe Jazzy would still be with us right now, Sandy's life wouldn't have been wasted, and we wouldn't be arguing!" Fenix did not reply to this.
"I'm going. You 3 can stay at your cave," Nikki said.
"You know what? I'm going with you," Sunny declared. "I've seen a change in these 2, as well. They just aren't getting my sense of humor!"
"Okay, then me and Sunny are leaving. When you figure out what's wrong, we can reunite again," Nikki announced. The chicks then left Gingernut and hopped on Sunny.
"Hey, get over here," Gingernut demanded. Fenix Jr. and Gabby only stuck their tongues out at her, while Sunny and Nikki walked away.
"Come on Fenix," Gingernut said. "Let's just live together happily and leave these freaks behind."
"No, Ginger," Fenix said, realizing his mistakes. "Nikki and Sunny are right."
A year's friendship was breaking. It was now up to Gingernut and Fenix to save it.
