Just starting our urban back yard chickens, we can only have 4 hens, no roosters but when you buy them they are not sexed, not sure what to do if we end up with a rooster in one of the chicks we bought..any suggestions

. Order them from a hatchery and you elect to get pullets only.

You can try rehoming roosters, post on your state thread to see if anyone local is looking for a roo, put ads up in the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade forum or on Craiglist or the feed store, etc. But, usually extra roosters are processed to eat, you can either process them for yourself or if you have a dog or cat to feed to them, or sell/ give them away to be processed, also again posting on Craigslist locally.
You can often buy chicks sexed though if you look, most feed stores carry them this time of year, or you can mail order them from small order hatcheries, occasionally they do make mistakes, but if you get something like sex links which can be sexed at hatch by color you should be OK.

Yes, this is the chances we all take when we get our chicks! If you purchase your chicks from a reliable feed store, especially one that carries pullets only, you will have better luck. Chicks are sexed at the hatchery before they are shipped and usually they can be 90% accurate on the sexing. Be careful at TSC as they carry a lot of straight run chicks and you can easily pick roos from these bins. If you order them from a hatchery direct, they are also fairly accurate with the sexing.
