John Denver was wrong

Im from Parkersburg, WVa originally, and oh, YES!! we got snow up there. The winter I moved to Tenn, my in-laws called and told us we missed a 3 foot snow storm. Sent us pictures. I was ticked!! Love the snow. Sure miss the snow. Doesnt snow at ALL here. If it does, it doesnt last long. Maybe a day or two, sometimes a week but thats only a few inches. I think last winter the most we got was 6 here, but the next day, it was gone. <sniffle>

The joys of larger scale chicken raising.

BTW, I'll be up in Wisconsin for Thanksgiving. You aren't anywhere near River Falls are you? I could use some good eggs.

We're along the river about 150 miles south of there, just across from the Minnesota/Iowa border.

I got that impression somewhere, maybe when you were getting ready to leave the Air Force. It's a bit out of the way for me.

For those of you that might not be familiar with John Denver here are the lyrics. If you want you can YouTube the song.

THANK GOD, I'M A COUNTRY BOY
John Denver
- words and music by John Martin Summers

Well, life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack
It's early to rise, early in the sack
Thank God, I'm A Country Boy

Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin' me a family and workin' on a farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I'm a country boy

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin' up the bow
The kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low
Thank God I'm a country boy

I'd play "Sally Goodin'" all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good
So I fiddle when I can, work when I should
Thank God, I'm a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I'm A country boy

Well I wouldn't trade my life for diamonds or jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I'd rather have my fiddle and my farmin' tools
Thank God I'm a country boy

Yeah, city folk drivin' in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinkin' that's a mighty keen
Son, let me tell ya now exactly what I mean
I thank God I'm a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well, my fiddle was my daddy's til the day he died
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side
He said...'Live a good life and play my fiddle with pride
And thank God you're a country boy"

My daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
He taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle
Taught me how to love and how to give just a little
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

chickensducks&agoose :

how about when your neighbor calls and they've got a cow down in the snow up to her leg pits (is there a better word for that?), and they need you to bring your shovel and your muscles and dig that cow out. luckily, I helped them while wearing my mother's coat, so mine smelled fine afterwards. she was horrified.

Leg pits!

So it's Easter Sunday '02 and our 45 year old mare goes down. We try (in vain) all day to get her back up. Call the vet out, and physically she is fine but her hips have just plain given out. We make the sad decision (spl). I refuse to have her body taken anywhere (to the dump) We can't find anyone home with a tractor or backhoe (it is easter sunday). So we get some shovels and do the deed. Now I live in Fla. and easter sunday is very hot down here. Now after four people take turns digging we say some prayers and bury the old girl (RIP Sugar). I have had animals my whole life but that was the hardest (mentally and physically) day on the farm. Not very charming but a way of life. I do love the song, and thank god I'm a country girl. (We do own a backhoe, now) LOL

geepy...45! That's amazing. I only know one other person with a horse close to that age. Her mare passed away at 42.

You must have taken excellent care of her. Kudos to you!
