Hi!
I'm excited to join BYC, (not sure why I didn't before). I've literally had chickens all my life. The usual, Buff Orpingtons (wonderful birds all around) Easter Eggers (very smart birds, usually the top of the flock) my family had Barred Rocks when I was much younger, they were good layers, and two years ago I got sex-link chickens, also good layers, and very curious, too. Now I have 39 chicks of various kinds ( brahmas, a minorca, some old English game Bantams, some Turkins and a bunch more, I'm not sure what most of them are, but that's half the fun of a surprise box, right?) and two ancona ducks, in addition to the Buff Orpington (Hen Houdini, because of her mad escape skills) and a red sex link (Oranga... because she's orange). Sadly, for several years I was unable to get my hands on more chickens, and my old flock thinned due to old age, a disease, and raccoons
. But now the coop is refined, and I'm feeling hopeful about my little chicks (they're 2 weeks old today).
I found BYC while googling different kinds of chickens during my aforementioned chook slump.
I run a small online newspaper (www.resiliencefarm.org) that deals with small farming, it has a plant of the week (written by my 11-year old brother, but it's very good), of course, a bird of the week and other bird information (updates on bird flu, etc) written by a girl who is even crazier about chickens than I am, and a comic, featuring my hens.
So, that's me, Gabby.
