I got my first chickens this past March, which turned out to be 12 hens (2 Dominiques, 3 Speckled Sussex, 3 Leghorns, 3 White Rocks and 1 Easter Egger) and 2 RIR roosters. Having had parrots for over 25 years until last year, I've been a bird brain for a long time.
Two of my girls are sitting on eggs right now and I'm excited to see if we'll get any babies or not. 3 weeks ago I succumbed to an
ad on Craigslist from a teenage girl and got 7 half silkie, half Leghorn babies that are now 5 weeks old. I've always wanted silkies so, doggone it, I got 4 silkies 2 weeks ago. So I've had a challenge with keeping the babies quarantined from the older birds and the 2 sets of babies from each other, plus trying to figure out how best to handle the expectant mothers. Luckily I have a Shih Tzu, Betsy, who LOVES chickens and gladly helps me all she can. Yesterday she found a stash of eggs under the bushes, and was LAYING ON THEM. She rose up to sit when I crawled in there with my phone to get a picture and she looks a bit embarrassed because I was laughing SO HARD!!

Here she is with the 4 Silkies (4 weeks old now) who came to my retail store with her today in honor of NATIONAL BRING YOUR CHICKEN TO WORK DAY. Do you all like that? I encourage lots of participation in this event next year!
