Hi all.
Name's Josie. I'm new to this group and to the idea of raising chickens. Can anyone help me find out what the policy is for raising chickens in Charlesbourg, QC? I have to convince my husband that I'm able to do so before he will entertain the notion of such a thing. Also, I found this very cute little coop that I would love to have... Your information, advice, suggestions would be great. Oh yeah, I have 2 dogs but hope to keep the chickens separate from them.

Thanks all.

You might want to go to your state trend and find people in your area to find out about local laws or go to your local city hall and find out about local laws that way .....

Welcome to BYC!

You can call your local town hall for information about your area and whether you can keep chickens or not. You can also stop by our Local Chicken Laws and How To Change Them section for more info and possible leads...

That is a very cute little coop, but you could only keep 2 maybe 3 birds in this space. Don't crowd chickens as they turn on each other easily. 5 square feet per bird in the coop and 10 square feet per bird in the run. So keep this in mind.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you a good link to get you started.

Welcome, the cute little coops that are sold - usually aren't very rugged and don't hold as many birds as the descriptions list. You have to consider a grown chicken should have about 4 sq.feet per bird inside the coop and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run.

Cats & dogs, love to chase & usually kill chicks/chickens. Please keep them far apart - you never hear of chickens killing a dog or cat - they just don't have the defenses.

Thanks everyone for your information.
I did write to the city to ask what the rules were BEFORE i read that others were doing it without permission. I heard back from them and I posted their response below.

I sort of thought about going underground after I read that others were doing it, but since my neighbors are really nasty I figured chickens would give them more reason to call animal control. We upset the rude neighbors by telling them to not dig on our property when we first bought our house, now they have made a war for us. They called the animal control on our dogs even though many other dogs were barking. Their dog even comes onto our property even though we put up a fence. Their excuse was that the previous owners let them do what they wanted on our property. Sigh...

Post from Charlesbourg City Government. Quebec.

Mrs. Bxxxxxx,

It is forbidden to keep chickens for your own needs or for sale or for any reasons. Here, in the area of Charlesbourg, our rules don’t allow somebody to have chickens. It might be different in other areas of Quebec city. But here in Charlesbourg, you’re not allowed.

Hoping this answer is satisfying,
