Judge My Roosters

I like number one as well...and for the second rooster, I'd pick number 7. I'd keep only 2 roosters...one top cock and one for a back up. Though I love the BA breed, that rooster doesn't impress me much.

I hope this helps, Rose Marie!!!
Yep now that I see what I need to look for on those BA's he doesn't impress me much either. His back is too curvy for lack of a better explanation. I also need to look at their eyes and see if I have a black eyed one and not the brown eyes.

Bee I found someone with the heritage breed Aussies and I think I'm going to get me a cockerel from them later on since mine are all too tall and lanky. I like them to be roundish and short for lack of a better way to describe them. Also all of mine have brown eyes to and they need to be black eyes from what I have read. Brown eyes mate to black eyes to get black eyes. ???? anyway.... IF I decide to keep all my RIR's I might need to just do one RIR cockerel with the Aussie cockerel to so I wont have 3 cockerels in the pen with only 14 hens.

Sounds good! You can get by with just one rooster for 14 hens if you'd rather. I usually like a 1:15 ration on young and vigorous roosters because they can easily cover that many hens without causing any wear and tear on any single bird.

for some reason this post didn't show up you'd replied to it. Yeah I only have the 2 RIR's cockerels and I think one of them is getting really close to being mature because I am seeing him change some. I am using my stick like you said do but he's still wanting to get close when I have food in hand. I started tapping a little harder on his rear end to get his attention. The other day I had one of the ba pullets putting a band on her and he walked right up to me and I had my stick laying there beside me just in case and I tapped him on the hinney and said you a little too close brother!

and when I did he jumped back and outta the way of my stick. Don't think he thought I had it in arms reach. I had 3 of the pullets that needed bands on them and he kept his eye on me the whole time. In fact I could NOT catch one of those BA pullets because the little heffer sp? kept getting away from me. So I let her inside the pen so I COULD get my hands on her. Honey he went to the back of the pen so he could watch me with that pullet!!! He's number 13 and now I am having to tap him a little harder to get his attention so I'm thinking he's getting closer. Still trying to sneak up on them and with him there is NO sneaking up now. He doesn't miss NOTHING! I am so glad I kept this one, or at least I am now! I SURE HOPE that doesn't change.

Also I was out there the other day looking at #13 cockerel and man he's getting so pretty. Will have to get a pic of him soon to show you. I started to come to the house that day and get my camera but was worn out and didn't feel like going and getting it.

Actually once getting rid of all those cockerels I can see just how many pullets I have and I have 15 of them instead of 14. I did have 19 but sold 4 BA's to a guy that lives close to us. So now I have 7 BA's and 8 RIR pullets. That should give me plenty of eggs once they start laying.

Yes, you will! Hope you have lots of cartons.

Why you chasing chickens around, hon? Just walk up and pick them off the roost at night. Make things easy on yourself.

Sure would like to see a pic of your good roo!

Prove it..send her a couple of dark, red roosters.

Then she can eat those inferior hatchery stock roosters once and for all.

LOL yeah I know about the dark ones already. These are OK with me for right now.

Bee here are a couple pix of the cockerel I was referring to. Man he's walking tall these days. OR should I say, strutting his stuff.

I just love the look of this RIR cockerel.

See the really dark pullet beside him in this pic? My nephew (the one I got these from) said he had ordered some eggs and they said they were heritage rir and then he got some from a lady on our states fb page and hers was rir as well. Anyway everyone is telling me these aren't hertitage sp? but I think I have 2-3 pullets that are actually hertitage ones.

Then this last one is #1 cockerel. All the pullets are basically staying with #13.

Then 13 is your man, isn't he? I like his proud look too and he is getting excellent size on him. I love that little dark pullet too and that is getting more towards their natural coloring, though still not as dark as some, she may even deepen in her coloring as she gets older.

I wouldn't worry too much about breed quality just yet, from how it looks in your pics you have a fine beginner flock of birds and you've done an excellent job on them...their feathers are just glistening! They seem to be in excellent condition for their age and I can't wait to see how they progress.

Not so much liking the roo in the last pic, though, and it looks like he would make a tasty meal before long. I think your flock has chosen their main man for you...which they usually do!
