July 13, 2011 Hatch Day! STARTED!!!!

whew ok... after my terrible experience (see previous posts) I did not even open the incubator for 5 days. Added a little water as necessary via the vents.
So today I candled and of course do not trust myself to kick out ANY eggs anymore. I do have one that smells a little eggy so it is sitting as far from the others as possible in case it goes..

I saw babies moving in some eggs. Others just looked dark and still but I know that is no reason to think there is not a baby in there.
4 more days till lockdown!!

I am thinking of putting some eggs under my broody hen who is sitting on duds. Maybe I will do it on lockdown day.

I have already ordered more eggs!! help I cant stop!!!

Thought I'd share, mama hen even seemed happy. I let her watch too and she didn't growl, she just made some gentle cooing noises at them

NOW hopefully hubby remembers to pick up some AA batteries for me so I can take pics of mama bird for yall.

I woke up this morning and found two that appear to be pipping!!! I think that's what you call it. AND I heard a chirp in there. OMG I am so excited. Unfortunately we have to leave for a baby shower in Midland today and won't be back until 5pm tonight

So 8 out of 10 eggs were good. I candles again the other night & one seems to have quit, the other 7 were great 2 that were VERY active.

The 15 that my mama hen was sitting on were starting to smell. So the other night we tried o move her. She put up a fight but glad e did b/c some of the eggs were really rotten & smelly. My husband & I candles them all & most seemed to be bad. We left 6 for her to sit on that were maybes. But she would not sit on them after we moved her. I don't think anything was going to hatch. There were so many bad stinky ones that they made all of them smell.

Tuesday is my lockdown day!

well the 8th was my hatch date for 41 eggs, only 24 went into lockdown and only 6 hatched, and we had to help 4 out because the pipped on the wrong side. so we went and opened them up to find a few live chicks, but 14 fully grown, dead chicks. this keeps happening to me, i get full grown chicks that never hatch. does anyone know why? they didnt pip the air cell or externally pip either.

Ah good grief, really? Sorry I can't provide any feedback seeing as this is my first time and I really hope it goes smoothly...but that's too bad. Are your 6 doing well?

I've got two chicks that hatched, one that pipped either last night or early this morning and hasn't done anything since.... should I check it or just leave it alone? Unfortunately I have to open the bator and take the two out that hatched because they are moving all the other eggs all over the place and pecking at eachother. Plus they knocked over the humidistat and I have no idea how humid it is:(

greening,
I think you should try dry incubation. Target 30% the first 18 days, and upper 50's to middle 60's for lockdown. I did that for my last hatch. They hatched thursday night into friday morning. All 8 That I put in lock down hatched with no assistance from me whatsoever.

Lovemychicklets,
If you haven't already opened the bator, try to wait. If the one's been pipped a long time, as long as you can see it poking at the pip hole every once a while, it'
s probably gonna zip and hatch soon.

Thank you, I let it go and didn't touch anything. As of this morning I have 4 NNs one turken that isn't a NN (????) and one Easter Egger out of it's shell. I also have 1 more EE pipped and chirping and 3 more NN eggs pipped. Yayyy! This is awesome for my first hatch, we're so excited! There are still 4 (I think) eggs that don't show any signs yet but we'll let everything chill in the bator for now. I've read that sometimes they can take up to 24 days to hatch...

I'll post pics of my new NN babies here soon
