Once upon a time, holidays were ALL celebrated on teir appointed day, regardless of hte day of hte week on which they occurred that year. Now there have always been a few that were celebrated on a specific day of the week: Easter (although it is not and never has been a Federal holiday), Labor Day, Thanksgiving. Then someone got the bright idea to celebrate all holidays on Mondays so that people could have several several contiguous days off. So you will find strange things like Veteran's Day (November 11th) occurring on a Friday, but celebrated on a Monday. Or July 5th the official holiday for Independence Day.

Sorry, I thought then and still think this change was a bad idea--the holidays are no longer honored and celebrated--it's just extra paid days off. It would be better to celebrate the holidays ON THEIR OFFICIAL DAY, and give people X number of floating days off that can be scheduled at their convenience---without having to shut down such things as banks and mail and government offices.

I'll be sure to tell my dad, who has busted his hump for the last 20 years walking in 110+ degree weather, pouring rain, and fog so thick you can't see ten feet in front of you that he's not a real American. I'm sure he'll be thrilled.

Amen brother/sister!!!

^ Agree completely!

I was rather irked with the school schedule this year... they had at least one 'holiday' a month... the obvious ones of course, but also things like Cinco De Mayo (that's one freaking battle that we weren't even involved in for Pete's sake)... and so on... so that there is a break every month... NOT always for teachers, but for students... I don't get it. When I was in school we didn't get all these holidays and we did fine, AND we didn't have the insane amount of stuff to cover OR the standardized tests to cram for either... one more reason we're trying HSing...

I think FEDERAL holidays should be ones that apply to all citizens... Independence Day, absolutely. New Years sure, it does mark the end of the year (and that'd be the TAX year) for everyone. President's Day, I can do that since they're POTUS... not the Prez of Texas or Montana etc. They were everyone's President. Thanksgiving, while not originally celebrated by many (there weren't that many HERE!) did take place here and marks a Non-Violent meeting of whites and reds... one of the few so I don't mind celebrating it! Memorial and Veterans ABSOLUTELY... without those men and women we wouldn't freaking be here... OR we'd be bowing to the Queen or speaking German. Those are holidays that effect all of us as Americans... not based on race, sex, religion, etc.

But, adding in special stuff that only certain citizens celebrate... well, we're getting to the point where everyone wants to have recognition for ALL of THEIR special days... if we did that, given our very diverse bloodlines, beliefs, traditions, etc. there would be NO work days... or at least very few... that didn't have SOME holiday somewhere... just like nowadays we're having to print government forms in a dozen languages so we're also likely to have to shut down to celebrate everyone's holidays.

OR, we could do the floating day thing, employers allow employees to choose which holidays they celebrate... and the only ones that shut down the entire country are the ones that actually have a thing to do with the entire country...

Oh Pineapple, I SO agree.

When I was a kid, the only school holidays were Fair Day, Thanksgiving Day plus Friday, Christmas through New Years, and Monday after Easter. All the other days were celebrated IN SCHOOL. There was usually an assembly and/or related assignments.

I wonder how many folks actually honour George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other presidents on their day off? Or honour veterans on their day off? Or ...

Our school doesn't even MENTION the Constitution on Constitution Day... September 17th btw... which I think is a bit odd... we celebrate the Declaration of Independence being signed, a document that Declared us Independent States... but we don't celebrate the signing of the document that makes this country what it IS. Boggles my mind. That is definitely one 'holiday' I would very much like to see added to the roster... doesn't need a day off, the folks that did the signing didn't take a day off, but actually READING the darned thing would be a pretty good idea in my book.

My goodness woman! have you lost your mind?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! People might ***GASP*** actually begin to have a clue about what our nation is SUPPOSED to be... Both the liberals and conservatives would be completely floored. Our founding fathers would roll over in their graves, sit up and start
