***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

@Kendreeva: OMG that is SO adorable!!! I want so badly to hatch one but I'm afraid it would kill me to sell it. Sadly I don't think we could actually keep one because we live in the city on a pretty small lot

I have 6 new chicks. I started with 18 eggs and put 16 in lockdown though there were 3 or 4 I was not sure about. I put 6 on there sides and the other 10 in a carton. All that made it were in the carton. I had 2 that pipped and died - one I could have helped if I knew what was happening. DRATS!

I had 3 hatch on day 22, 2 on day 23 and 1 today on day 24. I think I have an even split of 3 black and 3 blue Ameracaunas.

I'm relieved but sooooo happy. Will take some pics tomorrow to show off. This was the first time I have ever hatched eggs and it was exciting, wonderful and soooooo tension filled - I loved it! I did help 1 hatch out thanks to a BYC post that expained how to do so, so THANK YOU!!!! I was so bummed that that one had died I just had to find a way to intervene if I could. I admit my confidence only came from logging on and reading the instuctions and doing as they said....for the most part. This is great!! Think I need some sleep now...but I do like the look of the blue copper marans...

Well, my 3 remaining porcelain d'uccle eggs (that the PO had for two days too many) didn't make it. They developed completely but never absorbed the yolk, apparently dying around Day 18 or 19. *cry* I was looking forward to these, too. I'm planning on getting more eggs this fall when it is cooler.

Congratz to everyone who has had successful July hatches (which includes me, earlier this month) and hoping the August hatches go well!

No, this is an old hen, a cochin. She is at least 6 or 7yrs old with very few feathers left. I think she is senile.

Ohhh what a biddy then how are they doing?

Update, she got off the nest with the 2, I put the other 3 in the incubator. On the 2 that had started hatching when she got off the membrain had dried and hardened. I ended up having to help them. The other egg had died. So now I have 2 in the house, 2 days behind the others with the hen. Is there anyway to get her to take them???

Yeah, I told myself I would not keep more than 1 male but I don't know how I would ever give one up at this point if they both turn out male! I'm living in blissful ignorance right now because they are too young to tell their gender. I still have another 3-4 weeks before I have to admit to which gender they may be or face that I may have to give up one or the other!

This was the first to hatch. I don't care if it becomes a rooster or a hen I don't think I could part with it. I think and hope it will be a blue Ameraucana.

Yes, slip them under her at night! It is SOOO much better when the hen raises them! MrsK
