***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

My first July hatch is complete. My mama welsummer that I was worrying about killing the chicks did a good job hatching them out, but I took them all away and have them in a brooder. I don't have a safe place for her to be with them outside right now, and no place inside big enough for them.

She started with 15 eggs, and by the time the first one hatched yesterday, there were only 8 left. The first one to hatch, a bantam cochin X australorp, died during the night last night. I've got the little mystery blue bearded polish cross baby, and three other polish crosses. One is a welsummer X, one is an EE X, and one is an unknown brown egg. Maybe one of the lighter welsummer eggs.

They're darling, and the same size as the 1wk old bantam chicks that they joined in the brooder.

Now on to July 19 with my shipped eggs...

Hatching update: # 8 is almost out of the shell,
the one that was stalling hasn't changed much, but I swear I seen movement at the pip hole..........so I will not open the bator, I will not open the bator (till tomorrow)......

Well, there were some odd circumstances involving the first batch of duck eggs I've ever had. I was very nervous because they had to put up with lower humidity due to the chickens they are hatching with, and then when I went to put them on lockdown, I already had 1 pipped! Well, that one hatched today while I was out, and let me tell you.... chicks are freaking adorable once they have fluffed out, but they look like something hell itself has spawned when they first hatch and are soggy. Not ducklings. Ducklings are cute from the very first second!

So here's the first duckie of July (and ever!).... obviously not full Pekin!

And today I said goodbye to June's hatch as they went to their new home at the farm. Goodbye, Thirty! You were my favorite <3 I hope your July siblings will be as cool as you were.

So I'm waiting on 3 more Pekin mixes and 3 Polish... 1 Pekin's pipped (none of the ducks were SUPPOSED to pip/hatch until tomorrow) and the polish that were supposed to all hatch today I don't think will be hatching for at least another 2 days. What a mess!

So sweet, Ked!

Something got into the quail's nest.

There are still six or seven eggs left, but the way the shells are scattered around I think something was eating them rather than them hatching. Also one shell had a small bit of yolk on it...

We have a little garter snake in the yard. Don't know if it was his work or not. Hopefully the mama has another nest somewhere else in the neighborhood.

As for my own eggs, tomorrow is day 20 *sqeeee*

It will be hard enjoying the fireworks and our friends' cook out. You know where my mind will be.

I can't believe that they were due to hatch today (July 4) but all were early. I hope the overachieving continues. They are all now in their new quarters, happy, active, and peeping. Thanks to all of you who gave perfect advice to me with each new question I came up with.

I will post pics if I get time today.

I woke up this morning to a peeping in my incubator! A Marans chick must have hatched a couple of minutes before I woke, it's still wet and wobbly on it's feet. I'm so excited,
