July Hatch-a-long

Same here!! I woke up early this morning, excited to check the incubator, then I realized that I don't have any eggs in the incubator. I won't be hatching again until February

I'm so sad about it.

I went back and did the math from this year's hatches. I had 7 hatches, with an average 75% hatch rate. The verdict isn't in on all of the younger chicks but so far, 80% of all chickens I hatched this year are ROOSTERS. Good grief. We'll have to make room in the freezer. I also lost several to a fox attack, and during a storm, lost multiple pullets to flooding. So that's a bummer, but at least I'll have room in the coop to do more hatching next year!

Please let this last hatch be pullets!

Fingers are crossed for you

I've read in the OT threads to give them ACV in their water supposedly increases the rate of pullets vs cockerels, I've personally never tried it. got about 50/50 last hatch.

Someone told me the hens cause the gender. I had a lot of roos too lately wonder if the pullet eggs hatch at a different temp or humidity or if food the girls eat is a factor
LOVE to get a lot more pullets!!

Yay, day 21!!! Well, its early & I did hear chirping under a 2nd broody. Pretty cool outside, so I won't blame the gals for not giving me a peek! I'm sure there'll be more chirping later when the day warms up. So excited!!!
Good luck! no matter how man y hatches you get excited on hatch day and have to go look.. and look and look .

So true Roxannemc! 10:00 a.m. update!

Above is my first to go broody this season. On 3 eggs - have heard chirping, but keeping them concealed.

My 2nd hen to go broody & she's hatched out 2 chicks out of 6 so far! Yay!

My fave broody still has 5 chicks out of 9 eggs. Come on broodies!!!

funny story! this morning my hubby and I are sitting out back with the chicklets having coffee!!! and he says look look!! one of our 8 week old pullets is up on the back of one of the older hens...I knew her comb and waddles weren't suppose to be red yet!!! lol the hen was running and the little roo was holding her like roosters do but it looked like a rodeo because of the size difference!!

LOL!!! Too funny!

My understanding is that the hen determines the gender of the chicks.
