July Hatch-a-long

Oh that is just awful, poor babies! Such a horrible way to die!! I have fire ants in my yard, they never have invaded the run before except once when I fed some left over spaghetti that had a bit of ground beef in it, and wow the ants invaded quickly and the chickens couldn't enjoy their treat. It's amazing how fast they swarmed, and covered the run. I had to let the chickens out until the ants went away.

We are over run with ants! I'll have to read about keeping them away. They are probably too light for sticky traps, can't put poison.. hmm Will have to check that out! Pam

Hmmm. I think I counted wrong. I set the eggs on the 15th. Do I count the 15th, or after it's been 24 hr (the 16th) If I was wrong, and the date is tomorrow, will the extra day of lock down hurt them? I thought they were due today, and put them in lock down on the third. Thanks- Pam

ok- It was today. First one pipped at midnight (seems like one always does) But, it didn't hatch until the power outage! Luckily, I had my brother's generator, because I can never rely on our power company to keep the power on 21 days in a row. I'm serious! I've never run the 'bator without a power outage. I'm learning to be more prepared. 2 are pipped now, and I hear some chirping. <3 Thanks for the advice!

Nope. Let them be. They can hatch in a carton just fine. I've done both ways successfully.

And.... I had 1 of my 2 black ameruacanas harch! It's super cute. Candled the other egg and it was dead. Oh well. I have 1!

Now more waiting as the next week drags by before the next hatching starts!

Congrats! I hope the one Am that made it to lockdown hatches. Well, hope they all hatch, really.

I have put poison out around the perimeter of my house, amdro under my porch and still have tiny ants in my kitchen, HELP. Oh! I have out the borax ant bait too. This yr. with the rain nothing is working. So far, no fire ants in this cove in the mtns. of NC. I hated those things on the coast of NC. They are horrible critters.

Good luck with the hatches. Mine is still a ways off on the 13th. It is so hard to wait.

Chick #1 is a pretty light blue- l looks just like lavender, but not- Dad was a white Silkie, Hens are splash (lost my white hen and the Dad to a predator, these are the only color hens old enough right now).
  • Chick #2- Died about 5 minutes before I listened to my gut and helped him. Tried to bring him back, but couldn't. He pipped and zipped- but didn't get thru the membrane. It wasn't super dry- but I'm having a REALLY hard time with the humidity this hatch (Hovabator) I peeled the shell off, and he was blue. I meant the color blue, not blue from lack of oxygen.
Also had to open the 'bator to get the chick out that I was going to help. And the power went out AGAIN. I forgot to plug the 'bator back into the plug after I turned off the generator. I'm so mad at myself!!!!!!!! Let's see what chick #3 has to say. Have 2 pipped thru the shell (rocking) and 2 not doing anything, but when I candled, they were alive and ready. I think I slipped them in a day or two after, without marking them. I keep saying that I"ll quit adding them!

Here's chick #1- you can't really see the color in the pic- but it's a solid light blue all over. This pic makes it look splash..
