July Hatch-a-long

Thanks for the candling response. Going out today to pick up light. I think I will do the foil and TP roll. I also have marans that should be laying by fall. I need something that will help me at least pull duds by 14 days.

Hi! I'll join in. I set 7 Olive Eggers from my own flock to hatch on July 27. These will my my first attempt at OE, my Black Ameraucana roo over 2 Blue Copper Marans hens.

I just candled, and it looks so far like all 7 eggs are developing. Plus there's another interesting discovery...one of the eggs is a double yolk! I never would have set it if I'd known, but in the light I clearly saw 2 yolks, and 2 little eyeballs. So I know it's unlikely to successfully hatch, but I'm interested to see what happens! 8 chicks growing in 7 eggs....

CUTIES!!! What are they?

They are BBS english orpingtons hatched from eggs I got from Jeff :)

Rant alert: I know y'all will understand. At least one, probably more of my dogs raided my broodys nest! Omg I am livid! She had 19 lavendar orpington eggs under her and now there are only seven left! I don't have high hopes for the ones left, they were shipped and I had to wash nasty yolk and dog drool off them :-( I candled to make sure there were no hairline cracks and gave them back to her. My dogs have never raided a broody before :-( they will steal eggs but never from under a mama. All dogs are now tied or penned and mama is locked up tight. Now I have to worry about coons and such since the dogs can't do their jobs. /rant off.

Hi Brooster Springsteen LOL! I love the name

I had a blue marans x black copper roo and bred him with 2 of my ameraucanas (one lays a green tint and the other lays a blue tint) I'll be interested to see what comes out and what color eggs they will lay as this is my first time as well! Hopefully I get some hens out of the mix. I also crossed him with a RIR and a black sex link. I plan on keeping AT LEAST one of each, I'd like to post a topic with pictures of what they will look like in case anyone is curious, as well as the color eggs they lay.

oops forgot about my eggs lol... randomly thought about them today and checked their due date, 3 days! idk some of them look really wet inside and i dry incubated...i saw movement in the others that are due next week *its a scattered hatch* so i locked em down and 12 are due in 3 days so ill probably have chicks tomorrow, and the rest are due about a week later, but will likely only be a few days off, i always have early chicks but they are good hatches so i dont mess with the dial... i did notice a few days ago i had a little temp spike, so idk how this one will be

Have to go out to feed & water everyone outside, might take a few new pics...
Laugh or cry... Those are my two coping mechanisms. I've got five kids!!!

OK, so lockdown stinks. I'm trying to force myself not to look through the windows... I don't hear anything yet and don't see any rocking and rolling (although I did put them in egg cartons) - maybe I wasn't supposed to count the resting day as day one? I'm probably looking at Tuesday as being 21 days instead of Monday. Do Silkies hatch at 21 days or are they sooner?

I candled a few before lockdown and wasn't seeing movement (which I assume is because it's packed in there). It made me SO nervous. If I can't get any to hatch, I'm going to be devastated...

Lockdown is always the longest 3-4 days ever! I always stare through the windows. That's why I call it the hover-bator.

As for counting days, day 1 is always 24 hours after you set. So if I set today, Sunday, day 1 will be Monday. Another easy way to remember is that day 21 is always the same day of the week that you set on. So if you set on a Sunday, hatch day will be a Sunday. Silkies usually pip and often hatch for me on day 20, but it all depends on your incubator, temps, eggs, etc. I've had eggs hatch as early as day 18, and as late as day 24, but the VAST majority for me hatch on day 21.
