July Hatch-a-long

I'm a chick momma!!!!!!!! I did it!!!! It was one of the most magical things I've ever seen... We all crowded around the little window cheering her on until she just toppled out... Don't see any more pips yet - tomorrow is day 21. Honestly, I'll be ok if all the good Lord sends is one little Lavender AM. She's beautiful!

Came home to find seven little ones. All seems to have something wrong with their feet/toes. Curled under or bent to the side. Why did enjoys happen? Could it be passedon to futher gen? How can I fix. Remember they are quail. Pls help.

:fl  I am keeping my fingers crossed and prayers said for all of you. After my bator left mine cold twice. I ended up with one alive.  I left for a bit.  I was just hurting to bad to keep up for a bit.  Can you believe when I got my chick a friend she tried to kill it???  I had to put a wire between them and their only 4 days old, go figure.  It had cried for 4 days because it was alone.
I am wishing everyone good luck.  People around here are having terrible luck with their hatches.  They are blameing it on the weather.  It has rained so very much and the weather has not been stable at all.  So many low pressures too.

I am having major issues with the humidity. I am running out of ideas. I have a water dish, 3 sponges & a microfiber (soaking wet btw) dish cloth & can't get it to go higher than 65%... Hmmm close the vents? Yep. 80%.... So do I get to choose... shrink wrapped or carbon dioxide poisoning. Shrink wrapped or carbon dioxide poisoning... The 2 horns of dilemma.
I am so sorry about your hatch, the good news is you got one tough little chick & if you breed her you might get more chicks.. Quality over quantity maybe?

Weather out east is bad. T-storms off & on. I'm afraid that the power will go out. & early this morning I was woken up by lightning

What kind of flooring do you have for them? They could be injuring themselves on it. Leg/foot problems usually from lack of b vitamins in the hen that laid them from what I've read. I'm sure there are more reasons but that is the 2 I can think of right now.

Wow, I thought 65% was just right for hatching? The hatching of first chick will raise humidity automatically. Hope you have a great hatch! I look forward to pics! :)

Thanks! Yeah I've read 65% & I've also read 75-80.. if I could stabilize the humidity I would hatch at 65% but it's too risky right now the levels drop so fast. So it mostly stays in the 70's -when it gets to 80 I open a vent. When it gets down to 70 I close it. It was fluctuating like this every 5 minutes, now it takes a little longer so I'm hoping to stabilize at 70%
I'm hoping once a chick hatches I don't have to close the vent any more

I agree. My two are much quieter than the other times I've had chicks. (7 one time and 5 the other). The two in the brooder will be 3 weeks old tomorrow, and I have eggs in the incubator that are due the first of next week, so I'm hoping to put the bigger ones outside in the hoop over the weekend. Nights are still getting below 70 though (thank goodness), so I'm not exactly sure how that is going to work. Especially since the other 6 eggs under the broody seem to be developing well. Maybe I'll try to sneak the incubator chicks under my broody as hers finish hatching (assuming they hatch -- hate to count chickens before they hatch -- don't want to jinx it).
Hopefully you'll get some more since only chicks are lonely chicks I hear (I have only two and I think they sleep a lot since someone isn't always waking them up - ya know, one bumps one other and suddenly they are all awake - LOL).
