Interesting you should mention laying issues. I had a cuckoo Marans pullet that had a crushed egg inside her when I culled her. Weird.Lol! I didn't even think about that! Whoops. Should have tried a large chicken breed first. I too want to move on from hatchery stock & breed heritage chickens with strong bloodlines. I just had to put down my buff orp at age 2, with internal laying issues. & a couple more are starting to show signs.I think I will breed this flock anyway & keep their babies for fun. From now on only backyard breeders for me.
Aw, that sucks! Way to turn it around though! Best of luck with your future favs!Well, my last remaining egg had died when I candled it before lockdown. So, I had a 0% hatch rate. The good news is that I am supposed to be getting a young fav pair from Fancy Favie once the weather cools off enough to ship. I'm excited about that, and hopefullly will be able to hatch some of my own fav eggs next year!
the 5 I've got in lockdown- day 21- are possible silkie/sizzle. I have a silkie roo & sizzle roo in the pen- so could be from either one or both. Pretty anxious to see what they are- Plus they'll be my first grand-chicks since I hatched both the roos
She's cheering on another Lavender AM this morning. We've got another pip! Goooo babies!!!!Hopefully you'll get some more since only chicks are lonely chicks I hear (I have only two and I think they sleep a lot since someone isn't always waking them up - ya know, one bumps one other and suddenly they are all awake - LOL).
