July Hatch-a-long

Lol! I didn't even think about that! Whoops. Should have tried a large chicken breed first. I too want to move on from hatchery stock & breed heritage chickens with strong bloodlines. I just had to put down my buff orp at age 2, with internal laying issues. & a couple more are starting to show signs. :( I think I will breed this flock anyway & keep their babies for fun. From now on only backyard breeders for me.
Interesting you should mention laying issues. I had a cuckoo Marans pullet that had a crushed egg inside her when I culled her. Weird.
There are also smaller breed turkeys too, like the Beltsville White. The Malines at maturity are 9-13 lbs, with hens in 9 lb range. I visited a breeder & saw his 13lb rooster. Yowza! Big boy! I now have 7-6 week olds, 5-21/2 week olds & 18 eggs under 2 broodies. Can't wait to taste my first one!

Well, my last remaining egg had died when I candled it before lockdown.

So, I had a 0% hatch rate. The good news is that I am supposed to be getting a young fav pair from Fancy Favie once the weather cools off enough to ship. I'm excited about that, and hopefullly will be able to hatch some of my own fav eggs next year!

Aw, that sucks! Way to turn it around though! Best of luck with your future favs!

You are unlucky and then lucky. I got eggs from Cloverleaf that was perking along soo wonderfully good until day 18 and my bator went on the fritz and, I was gone for 9 hrs., Dr. appt. far away. The chicks all died but one marvelous chick that hatched. ( with my luck it will be a roo). I want some pretty little fav's.

. Oh well, as Gone With The Wind said There Is Always Tomorrow. There will be another time for hatching and I will use a broody. I have lots of orps. but sadly none of them are broody??? I do not have a roo with them and they are not in the mood this yr. I am thinking of getting a blond or reddish colored silky. White is out of the question in my red clay. It would not be possible to look anywhere near clean ever.!!!!!!!!! I will need a full size brooder hen.

I am an incurable hatcher.

Wow! 4 pages since I posted last! I have one hatchling so far... looks like it may be a FRIZZLE!!! Just hatched 20 minutes ago and already has feathers curling on its neck, head and belly! It kicked out a little early and detached the umbilicus a little soon, had to use some corn starch on it to stop the bleeding. Hope the little thing will be ok! 2 more pips and 4 wiggling... it's going to be a looooooong day!

sorry the pics are so blurry, my hands are shaking, LOL! Love the little curly feathers on the back of the head! And 5 toes! Silkie? Frizzle? Sizzle??? LOL! They're supposed to be surprises, guess that's exactly what I got! 1 out, 5 more to go!!!

the 5 I've got in lockdown- day 21- are possible silkie/sizzle. I have a silkie roo & sizzle roo in the pen- so could be from either one or both. Pretty anxious to see what they are- Plus they'll be my first grand-chicks since I hatched both the roos :)

Aw, that very sweet. Your first grand-chicks! Mine are just first generations, but they have all the Silkie characteristics I want. I have 2 that are about 7 weeks old and they're super cute. So, I'm hatching some more to get a decent start on my Sizzle project. I've got a long road ahead of me, ugh :gig
:fl for your chicklets!

Hopefully you'll get some more since only chicks are lonely chicks I hear (I have only two and I think they sleep a lot since someone isn't always waking them up - ya know, one bumps one other and suddenly they are all awake - LOL).
