Good Luck

Anyone know if silkies hatch late? I've got another Lavender AM that just pipped and is zipping away, but there's no activity at all from the silkie side of the 'bator.

This evening is Day 21, so I'm probably just being impatient...

Wow! Congratulations to all those with happy chicks!!! I have spent the past hour catching up on posts! It's so exciting, and so very addictive.

Also, so sorry to all those who had misfortunes occur.

I've had a mix of frustration, joy, and worry.

I set 24 eggs (14 BCM and ten frizzle) in a Brinsea on June 20th for a hatch day of July 11th. FIRST HATCH EVER, so I was a bit nervous. I candled eggs on the wrong end at first and then learned later how to do it. I discovered seven of the eggs never had anything developing in the first place.

Meanwhile, I was waiting for a shipment of Salmon Favs eggs from mypetchicken. I had more BCM and frizzle eggs waiting on the counter, and it got to the point where I just couldn't wait anymore! So, I put the dozen leftovers into a styrofoam incubator on June 29, and the nightmare began. (This was before I knew about staggered hatching.)

The temp spiked, the fan broke, fixed the fan, humidity was too high, temperature was still erratic, put in a PID controller to help the temperature stabilize and then humidity dipped, and I said, "I give up," and focused on the Brinsea. I left the eggs in the incubator, though upon candling didn't see a thing, because who knows?

On the morning of July 11th, a frizzle hatched in the Brinsea and I shouted for joy and named her Prima. Eventually, thirteen more eggs hatched, and I popped them all over to a brooder. After waiting a couple more days for the late bloomers, I realized it was past hatching, performed eggtopsies to find three dead chicks, two of them perfectly formed, one that had died earlier in development. Decided fourteen out of seventeen fertile eggs was a big win, and kept looking after the "Hamsters" as we call them (to differentiate them from the five week old chicks, "The Shorties"). Ignored styrofoam incubator. (I was also in a two week grad intensive during all this excitement where I lived and breathed writing two 25 page lab reports, so the annoying styrofoam incubator was at the bottom of my attention list.)

Last night, class had ended, and I could breathe again, and decided to finally face the failure of the styrofoam incubator. Opened it up, and what a smell! Candled the non-smelly eggs, and as you've probably guessed by now, I found ONE LIVE CHICK. Hatch day this Saturday. I'm afraid that with all the issues of the incubator, she may hatch out deformed in some way. I'm still going to do the lockdown and jack up the humidity tonight. We'll see.

In other news, the Salmon Favs finally arrived the other day from mypetchicken, and went into the Brinsea incubator last night. There were some detached air sacs, but I have them upright in the incubator, without a turner for another day, in hopes they reattach. I am picking up more frizzle eggs today and popping them in tonight. Again, we'll see!

It has been so helpful to read everyone's stories here. I am learning so much, and hope one day to give back on the knowledge.
