This is my first time and I'm worried about all the things that could go wrong. I had another nightmare last night regarding chickens.

If this keeps happening I'm not sure if I want to incubate ever again. I might just get a broody and have her do all the work which is what I wanted in the first place. My BO isn't doing well (she had issues with internal laying in the past- thought it was over but it's back... but that's for another thread) she would have been a good broody

Hi everyone!

Mind if I join in?

After incubating pretty much non-stop from Jan - April, a few good hatches & many disastrous ones (all shipped eggs) I decided to pack up my bators until some of my own chickens were laying. One of my silkie hens, a partridge finally started laying & I've put 8 of her eggs in 4 days ago. I have a blue sizzle roo & a white silkie roo in that pen so could be from either one, but I know the white is the 'big boy' in there. Anyway, I candled tonight for the first time & all but 1 is showing good development. I'll wait till about day 10 & candle again. I am so anxious to see how the babies look from these. The white silkie roo, "Sugar Peeps" is the 1st chick I hatched back in Jan. when I was starting over with chickens for the 1st time in 10 yrs- so these babies will be pretty special for me!

I had to look up what a sizzle was, then I learned about frizzles and frazzles. LOL I have a lot to learn! I would love to see what a partridge x silkie/sizzle looks like, full grown. PLEASE post pics

I beat my nightmare this morning. I still had 2 eggs from the June hatch in the incubator, and I was sure I was seeing veins and movement in one of them. (Day 29 today). I opened the egg VERY carefully, and it had quit about day 16 or so (from the pictures on the site). It was just the chick moving around when I moved the egg. I kept dreaming that I opened it up and there was a live chick in there. One nightmare down.

On to the next adventure. My BO is broody, so I'm getting her some eggs to hatch. We shall see.

I posted this in a thread and didn't get any repsonses, I was hoping someone here could offer some insight:

This is my first hatch out of a homemade incubator that did a really great job at maintaining 99-100 degrees. I had 11 bantam eggs and 13 welsummer eggs.

Lockdown, day 18, started last Thursday. The next day (day 19) 3 of the bantam eggs hatched. Many of the other bantam eggs had pipped, some even zipped half of the egg! Then the next day all the eggs died, except two.

By Monday, day 22, had two bantam eggs that we could see the chicks moving and breathing, but they just wouldn't progress. One had a large hole and the other was completely zipped and just wouldn't hatch. Tonight, day 22 we decided to help them hatch. The membrane was stuck to their eyes and feathers, they couldn't move. We rinsed them off and they have started to improve.

So we decided to open the other bantam eggs that had died. Same thing, the membrane was stuck to them. What happened? The first 18 days I kept the humidity around 30-35 percent, and then in lockdown it's been 72-75 percent.

Also the night we put them in lockdown, even putting hot water in the humidity tray, it took about 10 hours for the temp to get back up to 99. It stayed between 80-90 until it finally got back up to 99.

Now as far as the Welsummer eggs, here it is day 22, we have not seen any pip or movement. I've taken the bantam eggs out, got 5 chicks, two that we helped hatched. What should I do with the welsummer eggs? They are still in the incubator, and when I candled them on day 18 I saw several with very good looking air cells.

I believe the humidity was to low for your hatch. That will cause the problem you described. Also a high temp. will cause a to rapid hatch. Get a mercury thermometer to check your temps with each day. Also a new humidity checker.
Today is day 10 on my shipped dozen of faverolle eggs. They were shipped from Oregon to NC. Wow! its surprising any made it through the mail but they did. I have 6 of the 12 developing as of now. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Cloverleaf did a good job of wrapping them and shipping them to me. 11 more days to go. If I have 4 hatch I will be elated. they are show quality.

please , please for just a few hens. .......

Mine are due to hatch in 2 days and one just pipped the shell. Is that bad? It's only day 19 since they went into the incubator.

Two of mine hatched day 19, 3 on day 20, today is day 21and I've got one out and five to go!

I'm setting eggs today, my incubator is warming up as I type :)
Hopefully I'll see some babies around the 23-24th! My last couple of bator hatches were terribly disappointing, so :fl

Awesome howfunky! My broody's sister wanted to join too! Lol! Hatch day is July 23 too!
Hatching 6 BLRW under broody #1 & 13 mutts under broody #2. I mistakenly put 6 more under #2. Oops. Lol!

These broodies are production reds that were raised by an unrelated broody black star hen last year. Guess its true what they say about pullets hatched by a broody, will become broody themselves.

Keep that humidity up. you do not want them to get stuck in there. Other than that there is nothing else at this point you can do. Good luck.
