July Hatch-a-long

Well something told me to check the eggs. Good thing too. The temp had fallen again. !!!!!!! ?????? what I wanted to do is not in the book. One egg was cold to the touch. I checked and it chirped. I quickly layed it on a heating pad and pricked its air space and its breathing fine although i don't know if it will make it. The other 4 are dead and beginning to decompose.

. I have one very lonely Fav. that's is healthy and chirping one that might make it from 13 eggs because my one yr. old Genesis hovabator has flipped its lid. The warranty is off now.

I think I will just use a broody or order chicks for awhile my heart is broken. I did ectopses. The chicks were formed but beginning to liquefy.

Oh my, I am so sorry you & the chicks went through this

I hope the one still in the egg makes it so you won't end up with a lonely little one.

Lockdown starts tomorrow at noon! I'm getting nervous!

Last hatch was bad ... 7 set (4 silkies, 3 marans) and only one silkie hatched. This hatch ... starting out just as bad. Started with 12 buff orpingtons, down to 3 of those (6 were infertile, 3 died between day 3 and 7) and had 15 from a mix batch that I bought on Ebay of[FONT=Trebuchet, Trebuchet MS] seramas, silkies, d'uccles, frizzles and sebrights ... I have 6 of those left and don't know what's what... guess I'll be surprised with what hatches. We're hoping for at LEAST one orpington pullet. The orpingtons will be food chickens, so my fingers are crossed [/FONT]

that the 3 left will all make it. My incubator has been spazzing out for the past week, going from 98 to 103 in a matter of 20 minutes sometimes. Luckily I work from home so I can keep an eye on the temp and adjust or vent if needed. We live in GA, so the humidity has never been an issue (stays about 45%) I just don't want to cook the poor things. Looks like 3 sleepless nights ahead.

[COLOR=800080]deformities can still be caused from temp & humidity issues during incubation, not always genetics...[/COLOR]

Temp was a steady 99-100 degrees and humidity kept between 28-40%. I hatched a 8 blue copper maran chicks from the same breeder, they are very lively and active. The one wheaten chick is still lethargic but seems okay. All eggs came in the same box, arrived in same condition (all perfect, air cells in tact), were in the same incubator, turned at the same time etc. I contacted the breeder to see if they had been having issues with their own hatches, and they are going to replace the eggs - I am more than happy with that.
