This is a really great link that explains what will happen to your eggs if the temp gets too high or low:

I have thick olive eggs and dark welsummers. My normal flashlight technique isn't working for candling these eggs. I need to candle this weekend end. I need a powerful light. Any suggestions?
Dick's sporting Goods had one for $20 that is 140 lumes. Think that's strong enough to see through those dark shells?

Got a Coleman. 250 lumens. Wow! What a difference. Mid day and I can see them a few test eggs. Going through them all tonight. It was over $25 but ill consider it a hurricane supply to help justify the cost. Really can see "through" them now!

3 lavender, maybe frizzled silkies hatched today. 3 eggs left in the bator with 1 more pip. These were from a staggered hatch all in the same incubator, so they started lockdown 4 days early. I was worried but everything worked out fine!

I am about to just say forget the existence of lockdown. Lol. I went from 2 absolutely horrible hatches and getting only 1 chick from about 50 eggs. Since then, with staggered hatches requiring a little disturbance to turn some eggs while others are supposed to be in lockdown, I am surrounded by chick central right now. A little overwhelmed, even, hoping my free rangers stop laying fertile eggs for a while. Oy!

Lockdown is always the longest 3-4 days ever! I always stare through the windows. That's why I call it the hover-bator.

As for counting days, day 1 is always 24 hours after you set. So if I set today, Sunday, day 1 will be Monday. Another easy way to remember is that day 21 is always the same day of the week that you set on. So if you set on a Sunday, hatch day will be a Sunday. Silkies usually pip and often hatch for me on day 20, but it all depends on your incubator, temps, eggs, etc. I've had eggs hatch as early as day 18, and as late as day 24, but the VAST majority for me hatch on day 21.
CRUDDDD! I set on the 26th (a Wednesday). How am I so crazy far off?!?!?!?! I've got humidity up to about 80%. Should I just let it go now or try to dry everything out a bit???? Math confounds me... DARN IT! I had a schedule written out with the days numbered and everything...
